Today’s lesson …
1. Looking for more energy.
2. Players in the energy game.
LO: Looking for more energy
What do you think the rest of the landscape is like?
The search for more energy
• P18-19 Dunn and p30-31 Digby
• Demand high for energy resources, search gets greater and
greater into remote and environmentally sensitive areas.
• Areas that have been too difficult to reach or too sensitive
to mine in the past are now being considered or opened
up. Even Antarctica has been identified for its natural
resources.
• Fracking is being explored globally and tar sands are being
mined. Both are unconventional methods of getting energy.
• Results in huge environmental conflict. Issues of politics,
economics and NIMBYism.
LO: Looking for more energy
Reach for A* article
LO: Looking for more energy
The search for more energy
• TAR SANDS
• These are rocks and sands that contain
bitumen.
• Found globally and most is in Canada and
Venezula.
• Know about for a long time but only recently
mined as the price of oil has risen steeply.
• There are benefits and costs of this
unconventional source of energy.
LO: Looking for more energy
The search for more energy
Benefits Costs
Alternative supply of oil for world Energy intensive – takes equivalent of one
barrel of oil to produce two barrels of oil
from tar sands.
Could provide a safe and secure supply of
oil for Canada and USA (by 2030 16% of
their supply could come form tar sands)
Expensive. It costs $15 a barrel compared
to $2 for conventional oil.
Mining companies are required to reclaim
the land back to what it looked like before.
Landscape scared with toxic waste ponds
and petrochemical works.
Oil is vital to the economy. It provides
many jobs, epically in knock on industries
(e.g. mechanics or hotel workers)
Takes between two and five barrels of
water to produce a barrel of oil
