Connective tissue holds together and supports other tissues throughout the body. It originates from mesenchyme cells that can differentiate into other cell types. Connective tissue consists of cells embedded in an extracellular matrix containing collagen, elastic and reticular fibers in ground substance. Connective tissue comes in two main types - loose connective tissue with loosely arranged fibers and cells, and dense connective tissue with tightly packed fibers found in tendons and ligaments. The main cell types are fibroblasts that produce the fibers and matrix, while other cells include immune cells, adipocytes and pigment cells.
