In Prayagraj, as the word Kumbh enters ones ears, the picturesque vision of Triveni
Sangam, the sacred confluence of The Ganga, The Yamuna and the Mystical Saraswati
flashes in the minds of the people. At the sacred confluence huge multitude move like
waves in the ocean filled with sense of devotion. Lasting over 50 days and drawing
millions of people it is truly awe inspiring. So lets participate in one of the largest
Hindu festivals Kumbh, this pilgrimage of faith will take us closer to the Indian culture.
5. FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT
KUMBHA MELA
• Kumbh' literally means nectar.
• There has been an increase in the budget of Kumbh Mela by three times from Rs 1,300
crore( Kumbh 2013) to Rs 4,200 crore(Kumbh 2019) and the size of the mela ground has
increased from 2,000 hectares to 3,200 hectares.
• The UN body inscribed it on the 'representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of
humanity' at its 12th session in Jeju, South Korea.
• A separate logo for Ardh Kumbh 2019 has been designed by the state government.
• In 2019 it will be the first time, devotees will be arriving in the city through land, air and
water routes.
• For the first time Central government started an airboat service from Varanasi to Prayagraj
for the Kumbh Mela.
• More than 1,000 CCTV cameras were installed in the entire city for better monitoring and
mitigations of risks.
6. SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT
• The appropriate theme is “Swachh Kumbh Surakshit Kumbh”, so that 'Kumbh' can
send a message to the world.
• The Kumbh Mela is perhaps the only event in the world where no invitation is
required yet millions of pilgrims gather to celebrate the holy event.
• Apart from its primary bathing rituals, the social aspect of the festival also revolves
around the various Yajnas, the chanting of Vedic Mantras, holy elucidations,
traditional dances, devotional songs, programs based on mythical stories, and
prayers.
• A prominent part of the festival is the act of donations to the poor and helpless, to
the saints.
7. • The 2019 Kumbh Mela generated business worth ₹1,20,000 crores. While the
government expenditure on the festival was around ₹4,200 crore.
• About 5000 NRIs came to participate in Kumbh.
• More than 10 crore SMS were sent to citizens in three waves, providing information on
various aspects and facilities available for Kumbh 2019.
• On social media — Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — the campaign is relentless. The
official Kumbh handle on Twitter has a modest 18,000 followers. However, Facebook’s
official Kummbh page has over 1, 00,000 likes.
• Kumbh is boom time for many small traders and hawkers.
• The festival created around 600,000 jobs. In hospitality alone some 250,000 people
received work through the festival and hundreds of thousands more in tour operations
and airlines, local transport and logistics, as formal and informal guides, and in
emergency and ancillary support systems. Around 85,000 jobs came from medical
tourism and eco-tourism related to the festival alone.
8. KUMBH MELA ENTERS GUINNESS BOOK
OF WORLD RECORDS
• It’s a hattrick – 3 world records in 48 hours!
• First for the “Longest parade of buses”. 503 UPSRTC shuttle buses traversed 3.2 km
non-stop on the Prayagraj Bypass Expressway.
• Second for “Most people sweeping the floor together” with participation of more
than 10,000 sanitation workers across 4 venues.
• Third for “Most contributions to a hand print painting in 8 hours on 1 canvas”,
in which 7664 people participated.

10. DEVELOPMENTAL IMPACTS
• For Kumbh Mela, a new temporary city has been set up along Prayagraj, which has 250-km
long roads and 22 pontoon bridges. According to news agency ANI, this is the largest
temporary city in the world.
• Total expenditure of about 4,300 crore, of which state government has spent 2800 crore, and
rest is on Central Government.
• Kumbh Mela transforms Allahabad into a giant outdoor art gallery. Allahabad has a new
name. The city also has a new look.
• For the first time, an Integrated Control Command and Centre has been established in
the Kumbh area. The system facilitated controlling and keeping safe the traffic movement
and the crowd coming to mela.
11. • 4 Police Lines with 40 Police stations, 3 Mahila thanas and 62 Police Outposts were
set up as a part of Kumbh Mela, Jal Police established 3 Units across the Kumbh
river area.
• Around 4000 hotspots were set up across the mela area for providing high-speed
Wi-Fi for all pilgrims and visitors.
• More than 40,000 LED bulbs were installed to brighten up the Kumbh Mela.
• In all, 1,22,500 toilets, including 20,000 septic tank toilet were constructed.
