1 Chu-Seok ! 
Chuseok is on August 15th on the Lunar Calendar 
 Korean saying “Chuseok” or “Hangawi” 
 “Han” means “the middle” 
 “gawi” means “fall” 
 “Hangawi” means “in the middle of fall”
2 Ancestral Rite ! 
In the morning of the Chu-Seok day, most of Koreans perform the 
ancestral rite. (A long time ago, Korea was the agrarian society) 
 Preparing the foods for this rite 
 Make a deep bow like in the picture 
 After finishing the rite, every family has food together.
3 Special Food ! (Song-Pyeon) 
Songpyeon is the type of rice cake 
Make dough and filling with sesame 
seeds, adzuki beans, soybeans and 
chestnuts. 
Wise old Korean saying, if you can make 
the beautiful songpyeon, then you will 
have a beautiful daughter. 
Mix the rice, flour and water 
to make the dough. 
Pinch off a little bit of dough 
and make it look like the half 
moon. 
Filling with the sesame seeds, 
adzuki beans, soybeans and 
chestnuts (one small spoon). 
Make it beautiful so “you will 
have a beautiful daughter.” 
Put songpyeon in a steaming 
bowl and steam. 
(about 18 minutes.) 
Take songpyeon out of bowl. 
Mix songpyenon and sesame 
oil to make non-sticky.
4 Special Play ! 
Gang-Gang-Sul-Le ! Ssi-Reum ! 
 This is the traditional Korea circle dance. 
 The women hold hands with next person 
and dance under the Full Moon. 
 Dancing and Singing the traditional song 
“ganggangsulle” at the same time. 
 This is the traditional Korean wrestling. 
 Each person grabs the opponent by the 
cloth belt (called satba). 
 A player looses the match when any part of 
his body above the knee touches ground.
Wish upon the Full Moon 
before you go to bed !
