my attention that Council had purchased a Trimble GPS device seven years prior
but had not used it. Using my own initiative I contacted the supplier who trained
me in the use of the device. After speaking with Council staff in the field on the
use of the device and how it could progress data collection and reduce paper
work I was able to instigate a plan to utilise the Trimble GPS device in the work
place.
I am please to declare the Council now has four Trimble GPS devices in the work
place and four computers in maintenance trucks enabling staff in the field to log
onto the Council server for live map updates of Council owned and managed
assets.

I was fortunate to gain employment with Walgett Shire Council in 2005 as an
Asset Officer. On commencement of my employment I was asked by the
manager of engineering to take over the position of crown lands in the short term,
due to the recent death of the position holder in a car accident.
I was shown her desk and told ‘I don’t know anything about what she was doing
can you just do it’. I was able to identify that Council had over 600 crown
reserves in the shire in doing so I introduced booking procedures and fee and
charges for the use of over 60 reserves. Negotiating leases and licenses
simultaneously on behalf of Council as Reserve Trust Secretary ensuring that
Councils regulatory responsibility were met under the Crown Land Act 1989.

indentified that asset data was held in a number of different types of data bases
(GIS, excel, access), some of the data was duplicated and not current.
I was able to manipulate the data condensing it into one data base ensuring that
the most current data was maintained and easily accessible to all stake holders.
I have recently update Council roads data based from lines on a map to polygons
hence road segments and road edges can be effortlessly identified for ease of
