3. Brothers,
We had a good turnout for the breakfast on January 19. It has been quite awhile since
we had such a good turnout. Thanks for the Knights, Columbiettes and the youth
volunteers. We still could use more volunteers, especially at 6:30 for the setup and
approx. 11:15 for the teardown and cleanup. Remember this can provide service hours
for the Students and for those parents with students in St. Bonaventure School, this is
also good for your Service hours.
Respect life.
We presented a check to Deacon Tom as Council 12240’s share of the Hollywood
Respect Life’s Ultrasound machine purchase, Thanks to our benefactor Sk. Victor Pino
who donated the funds. Please keep Victor and his family in your prayers as he has
taken a new position in the Republic of Guinea West Africa.

I come to you with some news with mixed emotions. I have decided to relocate to the
Villages 50 miles North of Orlando. This is not a sudden decision, I have been weighing
the pros & cons for over a year. I spent a couple of weeks at the villages, found a house
to rent for a year so I can validate my decision. I have decided to make the move in May
of this year.
I have worked hard for this Council and I have very mixed emotions about leaving Council
12240 and the St. Bonaventure parish family but at the same time I have decided I must
move on and I could not pass up this opportunity.

5. The impact on the Council should be minimal. We need at least one candidate to be
placed in nomination for the position of Grand Knight. This does require a 3rd Degree
knight however this should not be a deterrent. There are multiple 3rd degree
exemplifications prior to the election.
Now news of the council. We are partnering with the St. Bonaventure Relay for Life Team
and their fundraising for the American Cancer Society. They will be co-sponsoring our
March 16 Pancake Plus Breakfast. They will be assisting with the preparation, serving
and cleanup at the breakfast we will split the profits 50/50 with them. Come out meet new
parishioners and help the American Cancer Society search for the cure of Cancer.
I am sad to say due to unforeseen personal circumstances, Daniel Peiretti has found it
necessary to resign as our Council Financial Secretary. We need to find a replacement
for Daniel, this is an appointed position, appointed by the Supreme Knight, Carl
Anderson. This is a stipend position, with a small fee awarded to the Financial
Secretary. If you are interested I will be glad to submit you for approval to the Supreme
Knight.

My Dear Brother Knights,
Today, we celebrate Ash Wednesday and
begin the Solemn Season of Lent. The English
author, G. K. Chesterton one said, "The soul
does not die of sin, but by impenitence." More
deadly than sin itself is the refusal to
acknowledge sin, and to repent of it.
Repentance is at the beginning of every Mass.
It is also how we begin the Solemn Season of
Lent. At the beginning of the Mass we pray:
"Lord, have mercy." When we appeal to God,
we are acknowledging that we can never get
rid of sin on our own. Sin is like an addiction.
Part of the reason for the success of
Alcoholics Anonymous in dealing with the
addiction to alcohol is the spiritual soundness
of the first two steps of the twelve steps. We
admitted we were powerless and appeal to
the only power that can make us whole. That
is so countercultural. The self-help books tell
us that we are not powerless. We can do it on
our own. We can get our act together. The
only thing we lack is self-confidence. In
confessing our sins, we are not asking for an

increase in self-confidence. Instead, we are
appealing to God for mercy. Prayer for God's
mercy is one petition which will always receive
a favorable response. In Isaiah 1:18 God says:
"Though your sins be like scarlet: they
become white as snow." In Isaiah 43:25 God
says: "I wipe out your offenses, your sins I
remember no more." That is the Good News!
My Brother Knights, let us pray for the grace to
choose penitential practices that will bring
about compunction--the deflating of our egos
during this Lenten Season. If we do it, we will
know that we will have a fruitful Lenten
Season because they will bring us to the foot
of the cross where Jesus gave his life for the
forgiveness of our sins and for our eternal
salvation.

9. Breadwinner’s Income
While jobs may be safer in 2014,
accidents, injuries, and illnesses that
can impact your ability to work still
happen. Most, in fact, do not happen
on the jobsite or place of employment.
Did you know that a 2011 study
revealed that more than 95 percent of
the long-term disability claims on file
were not work related?
The Knights have always sought to
protect members’ families from the
“loss” of a breadwinner. I’m sure you
know all about Father McGivney’s
vision for our first, insurance program.
But you may not know that Father
McGivney also wanted to find a way to
help members who couldn’t work
because of an illness. After all, the
“loss” of the breadwinner does not
have to mean that person’s death; it
can also mean the loss of the
breadwinner’s income.

10. Consider that loss for a moment. How
would your family fare if a source of
income suddenly stopped? Could a
dual-income family manage on one
income stream? What about young
families with a working father and a
mother who cares for the children?
What if his income halted due to an
accident or illness?
I’ve heard some people say they have
coverage at work, but too many aren’t
sure what this coverage entails, how
much income it would provide or for
how long. Having this protection
counts for something, certainly, but it
isn’t “yours”; it’s provided by the
company for which you work at their
discretion. It could be eliminated
tomorrow.

12. St. Bonaventure Columbiettes will be
raffling off a St. Patrick’s Day Basket at
the Young at Heart March 1st and the
Pancake Breakfast March 16th. We will
also be selling 50/50 Raffles at the
breakfast. Columbiettes are invited to

our annual convention in Orlando, April
