Kirk Hallam Nursery School was built in Sri Lanka after students at Kirk Hallam College in the UK fundraised £5,000 following the 2004 tsunami. The money was used to construct a school building in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka through the Shiva Charity. Construction began in 2006 and was completed by the end of the year. However, the school was not opened until April 2007 due to safety issues and violence in the area from the Tamil Tigers terrorist group that was fighting the Sri Lankan government. Once opened, the school needed continued funding of £60 per month for costs, and fundraising efforts were undertaken to support operating the new school.
