The 58th
AGM of KFAMoves North East Region took place at The Durham Free School,
Gilesgate on 21st March. Ann Bayley, President, opened the meeting by thanking the teachers for
the day. Carole Johnson had taken a training session on the use of music in the morning, while
Nicola Pilmoor got everyone going with some funky moves, Catherine Gilsenan created some
jazzy choreography, and Janet Balfour treated us to a fun excercise/dance circuit session. Thanks
also, to Christine Chapman, Carol Yeomans and Margaret Weetman for the refreshments and
afternoon tea, and Joan Holmes for the raffle.
Regarding officer roles, all current Executive Committee Officers were elected to stand
again. However, 2015/16 would be Lynne Casey’s final year as Chair, and Marilyn’s final year as
Secretary. The Chair asked for urgent nominations from the membership to come forward and
shadow Marilyn in her role, with a view to becoming Secretary in 2016.
Following the AGM, everyone was treated to two performances by Spectrum Dance, a
group coached by Christine Chapman. They showcased their two items at the Youth Moves
Extravaganza in November 2014 (Jazzy Blues – using canes - to “Can’t Rely on You” by Paloma
Faith, and Contrast to “Read All About It” by Emili Sande), and it was lovely for them to have the
chance to perform them again and for members to be able to see them.

Winner of Grace Taylor Membership Trophy –
South Tyneside
2015 marks the 20th
occasion on which the Grace
Taylor Trophy has been presented to a KFA Branch for
achieving the highest annual percentage increase in
membership within the North East Region.
Although the North East saw an overall drop in
membership of 22 this year, Chester le Street and South
Tyneside saw the highest increase, and in percentage terms,
the result was very close. However, South Tyneside came out
overall winner, with an individual 17.77% increase. Well
done!
Judith Cossavella, Regional Membership Registrar,
was delighted to present the trophy to Barbara Carter, who, as
Branch Treasurer and Executive Committee Representative,
accepted on behalf of South Tyneside.

produced the North East Movement Team for the past two
years, plus is now undergoing her Trainer course. She is also

PULSE 2015
U.Dance Event at Washington Arts Centre (19th
March)
Pulse is a series of events that celebrate the best in youth dance across the region and provide groups
with the opportunity to perform in a professional space, be inspired, see each other’s work and
acknowledge the talent of young creators and performers. Dance is a great way of sharing skills,
developing confidence, self-awareness, body awareness and communication. It is also a tool to
encourage group work and social skills and not forgetting dance is great fun! (at any age). The ethos of
the Pulse events across the region remains the same; all of the Dance Hubs involved are keen to create
events for more and more people to enjoy being part of something special and making memories.
DANCE ELECTRIC
The group meets weekly on a Monday 3.30 – 4.30PM at Park
View School, Chester le Street.
“EMOTION”
This is a new group who have only been together just over
one term. The group came up with descriptive words in
relation to the song and developed the piece in improvisation
sessions. The movement motifs have been developed using
Labans’s Analysis of Movement.
MUSIC – Say Something by Christina Aguilera.
SPECTRUM DANCE
The group meets once a week at Park View Community
Association Chester le Street.
“SINISTER”
This piece was created by the group during a series of
workshops. They wanted to work to music which has a
menacing and spooky feel and sound. The movement
motifs have been developed using Laban’s Analysis of
Movement. Spectrum Dance designed their own costume
and makeup to enhance the theme of the dance.

NATIONAL FESTIVAL 2016
Our National Festival will once again be held at the Birmingham Symphony Hall but will
be a little earlier on Saturday 30th
April. This was the only date available for us but the
2018 date has been pre-arranged now in order to get a later date in June.
Lynne Casey will be Show Producer again and hopes that the success of last year’s
Festival can be built upon. So put this in your 2016 diaries now!!!
The North East is looking for Producer names to train a team for the Festival. Although
there will be no firm details on a theme and content until after the first working group
meeting on June 5th
, please contact Lynne as soon as possible if you would like to be
considered to produce either an adult or Youth Moves Team, sending a brief CV of your
experience. You will then be contacted after the meeting with the 2016 brief so that you
can outline what type of item you would wish to put forward and the NE selection
committee can finalise their choices.

JOYCE ETHERINGTON
Joyce Etheringtonhasbeenamemberof MiddlesbroughKFA since 1962,and recentlycelebrated her 90th
birthday.
She has always been keen to exercise, and took part in lots of Panorama items over the years, and also
National Festival teams at the Royal Albert Hall. The photo shows Joyce (3rd
from right on the front row) in a
team wearing the early type of outfit that was worn in displays.
When we at Middlesbrough KFA celebrated our 50th
Anniversary, Joyce cut the cake along with Myra
Burton – as longest standing member and teacher.
Joyce is still quite active as a KFA member, and dances whenever she hears music. She is in very good
health, and still walks every day whatever the weather.
She has had quite afew birthdaycelebrationswithfamily, friends and keep fit class, and we wish her ‘all
the best’ for many more years.

South Tyneside's Charity this year is to be
- Daft as a Brush –
http://www.daftasabrush.org.uk/
Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care offers staffed custom-made vehicles to transport outpatients, free
of charge, to and from Freeman Hospital who are undergoing Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy cancer
treatment.
The regions covered by Daft as a Brush are: Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Durham
Newcastle upon Tyne and surrounding areas. There is no charge to the patients for the Service. The
service entails collecting and transporting the patients in a safe and comfortable environment, from
where they are living, taking them to where they will be having their treatment. If required, staying with
the patient whilst they have their treatment and then bringing them back home in readiness for their next
course of treatment. The daughter of one of our ladies from South Tyneside Branch is being supported
by Daft as a Brush transport at the moment.
Brand-new ambulances are now in action named Polly Pebble, Speedy Squirrel, Starlight, Sparkle,
Goldheart and Gosforth Guardian. These new Ambulances offer the patient more comfort, convenience
and extra room. More Ambulances are due to arrive very soon. The fleet has increased to 16 and were
involved in 10,000 patient journeys in 2014, this year they hope to do 12,000 to 13,000 with the
increased size of the fleet. Hopefully with a little help from South Tyneside it will continue to rise.

Blooming Success!
South Tyneside held a flower arranging night on
Friday 27th March with Ethel Ramsey as the
presenter - Ethel did four arrangements - all so
different – and explained what she was doing all
the way through.
At the end of the evening the four displays were
raffled, and as you can see by the photo the
arrangements and Ethel were a great success.

On 27th
March we held our annual Class Rally/Display (our “mini Panorama”). Members of 4 different
classes around Darlington perform little sequences that they have been working on for a few months.
We have fun learning dance movements that stretch and tone the body while being choreographed into
interesting items. The sequences are varied, and using different styles of music. You learn in class, but
you don’t have to perform in the display if you don’t want to (but nearly everyone does!). We find that
working on dance sequences improves coordination, balance, posture, muscle tone, and flexibility. In
all, there were 10 display items. Catherine Gilsenan did the Warm Up, and Margaret Marston the Cool
Down. This event is a firm favourite every year
– and just goes from strength to strength!
