  1. As we look at the IT industry today, a number of important trends are changing the way software is being purchased, deployed and used in the organization. Data Explosion The volume of data in the workplace is exploding. According to IDC, digital data will grow more than 40x over the next decade. As more and more data is created digitally, we expect to see ever greater demands being placed on our data platforms to store, secure, process and manage these large volumes of data. Consumerization of IT Today we see an increasing trend toward the “consumerization” of IT—creating the demand for Web 2.0 experiences in the business environment. As consumers, we are accustomed to powerful user-friendly experiences, whether searching the Internet on a mobile device to find information instantly, or quickly accessing our personal financial data. In the workplace, however, we are often unable to answer even the most basic questions about our business. Increasingly, users demand business experiences that more closely mirror the convenience and ease of use in consumer life. Private and Public Cloud Cloud computing is changing the way data is accessed and processed, and it is creating whole new models for the way applications are delivered. According to IDC, Cloud services will account for 46% of net-new growth in overall IT spending. With private and public cloud infrastructure, organizations have an opportunity to reduce TCO dramatically as data volume increases. As we see an evolution toward greater use of private and public clouds, we see an increasing need for solutions that support hybrid cloud scenarios.
  2. Let’s start today session by looking at some key trends that are impacting customer priorities when it comes to their data platform solutions. One of the key trends we are observing when it comes to mission critical workloads is the focus on in-memory databases to improve performance and efficiency. One of the key enablers has been the dramatic drop in pricing for memory to where it is now possible and relatively affordable to put databases in-memory.

  4. Per our prior conversation, for SQL Server “14”, we will have a focused feature set for the release in order to deliver those key capabilities to market in a more accelerated timeframe. The four key areas of innovation are: xVelocity In-Memory Technologies Enhancements to High Availability Support for New hybrid scenario Extending Immersive Experiences xVelocity – Two primary capabilities being brought to market Project Hekaton Extending our in-memory technologies for the OLTP workload to deliver tremendous performance enhancements to market A key customer Bwin at the PASS Summit 2012 was able to demonstrate 15x performance for their workload and there is a customer video for more information Project Hekaton was announced publish at the PASS Summit 2012 last November, although there is no public information on release timing Greater performance for existing and new applications Updateable column store As we have discussed with PDW V2, the next generation of our column store technology will deliver performance benefits as well as compression benefits and will be updateable for new updates to the table HA Enhancements Rolling update with online operations Fit and finish with HA New Hybrid Scenarios – Smart Backup and Active Secondaries DAX-MD
  5. Now that you have seen how Edgenet benefited from SQL Server’s in-memory capabilities, lets take a closer look at our unique In-Memory approach. First and foremost our in-memory approach is unique in the marketplace because it is built-in to the core databases. It is not a separate database solution and there are some major benefits of this including not having to rewrite your entire SQL Server application and still being able to see dramatic performance benefits. On average we are seeing 10x transaction speed from our customers testing our new in-memory capabilities. We have seen even up to 50x improvement, but it all depends on the amount of business logic that is done in the database via stored procedures, the greater the logic in the database the greater the performance increase, more the business logic sits in the app the less opportunity there is for performance increase. In addition to performance gains without rewriting the app another key benefit of the built-in approach is you can also leverage full SQL Server capabilities in addition to in-memory. This is not the case with standalone in-memory database solutions. Not only is it built-in it is also uniquely interoperable with non-memory tables. This way you can optimize the memory you have for the most utilized tables and leave other on disk. This also means you won’t have to go out and buy expensive new hardware to make large in-memory databases work, you can optimize in-memory to fit your existing hardware. Finally we are focusing on In-memory OLTP because its one of the biggest features in SQL Server 2014, but we also have in-memory capabilities across all workloads including OLTP, DW and BI and best of all you don’t have to buy 5 or 10 different SKUs to make this happen it is all included in the Enterprise SQL Server 2014 SKU. Lets take a look at another customer seeing significant benefits from utilizing In-Memory OLTP capabilities of SQL Server 2014. BWIN is an online gaming company and revenue directly equates to number of tranasactions per second and with SQL Server 2014 In-Memory OLTP they improved their transaction speed by 16x, without investing in new expensive hardware! Key In-Memory Features include new In-Memory OLTP, an enhanced ColumnStore that is now updatable and offer greater data compression in addition to in-memory speed for DW, In-Memory BI with PowerPivot and Also new is extended Paging to SSDs from your BufferPools as well as an enhanced Query processing that will improve all Query performance across all workloads up 3x faster. Ok before moving on I am sure many of your are wondering how we compare to the recent announcements from Oracle at Open World with regards to new in-memory capabilities. In summary they are still playing catch up to SQL Server when it comes to in-memory capabilities. What they announced is an In-Memory Data Warehousing column store, which we released in SQL Server 2012.   8. Now that you have seen how Edgenet benefited from SQL Server’s in-memory capabilities, lets take a closer look at our unique In-Memory approach. First and foremost our in-memory approach is unique in the marketplace because it is built-in to the core databases.   9. Lets take a look at SQL Server Scalability and how new capabilities in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 enable SQL Server to scale. When it comes to scaling compute, Windows Server 2012 not only provide scale for large mission critical databases in a physical environment but also in a virtual environment. WS 2012 supports up to 640 logical processers to tackle the largest applications. In a virtual environment you can utilize up to 64 virtual CPUs per VM and up to 1TB of memory per VM. In addition you have now have up to 64 nodes in a SQL Server cluster. You can also scale networking with network virtualization capabilities in WS 2012 R2. This helps SQL Server because it also you to move on workload from one datacenter to another without having to worry about the underlying network. With the Nic Teaming feature in WS 2012 you can pool multiple NICs with allows for greater network flexibility for SQL Server databases. You can also assign minimum and maximum bandwidth criteria to improve Network QoS. With WS2012 you can also virtualize storage allowing you to accumulate all of your storage and assign pieces to different workloads. You can also tier the storage for higher performance for example a mix of SSDs and standard disks allowing you to create tiers so you can keep hot data in the fastest tier and less utilized data in lower tiers improving performance without increasing costs. Just like WS2012 allows you to create pools of infrastructure and refine and tier those pools, SQL Server take that a step further and provides this type of tiering at the SQL Server instance level with Resource Governor. In addition to being able to pool CPU and Memory you can now with SQL Server 2014 pool IO and tier the pool per your criteria ensuring greater scale and performance predictability for your SQL Server workloads.

High Availability is typically viewed as a top priority when comes to mission critical workloads and with SQL Server 2012 we introduced AlwaysOn feature which provided the 9’s necessary for mission critical workloads and per customer feedback thus far, is viewed as the top ranking feature introduced in SQL Server 2012 when it comes to mission critical. In SQL Server 2014 this feature gets even better to provide you increased availability, greater efficiency and well as easier to deploy and manage. When it comes to increased availability you can now failover multiple databases at a time both manual and automatically. You can now have up to 8 secondary replicas if needed. This allows you to offload even more BI and reporting using additional secondaries. Also when doing online operations on your secondaries can be 100% available. SQL Server 2014 supports WS 2012 R2 Clustered Shared Volume allowing you to provide enterprise class HA without expensive SANs positively impacting your bottom line. In addition you can improve efficiency of your secondaries by offloading reads functions like BI reporting to the secondaries and can even use the secondaries for backups. Finally SQL Server 2014 introduces new wizards that allows you simplify the deployment of replicas on-premises and to Windows Azure, we will talk more about deploying replicas to Windows Azure a bit later. When it comes to managing you can monitor the replicas in SSMS and System Center. The diagram shows you a typical AlwaysOn HA deployment where there is a synchronous replica for DR and asynchronous for backups and both secondaries are be actively utilized for greater efficiency.   13. Now let’s take a closer look at the new Reserved capacity we will preview as part of Premium. Today, with the Web and Business editions, SQL Database customers databases share resources. This means that a customer’s database application performance can vary depending on activity of other DBs in the shared pool. Since it’s not known if or when other databases might need to consume more or less resources, an application may need to compete with another for resources in the pool. This can lead to unpredictable performance. A great example of this is if you showed up to a community pool during ‘open free swim’ with the intention of swimming laps and had to compete with a bunch of splashing kids with noodles and rafts. This wouldn’t offer you a very good swimming experience. On the contrary, you might show up to the same community pool during ‘open free swim’ and the kids are just playing in the corner. This might offer you a better swimming experience. Yesterday, in Satya’s keynote he announced a new Premium offer for Windows Azure SQL Database that delivers reserved capacity for more powerful and predictable performance. Imagine now, showing up to a community pool during ‘lap swim’ where you can swim predictably in dedicated swim lanes. The new Premium offer will deliver a fixed amount of capacity for the SQL Database primary database and 2 built-in HA replicas. This new capability enables Service Integrator, ISV, and CSV partners to raise the bar on the types of Modern Application services and products they can build and offer to customers. This premium offer is ideal modern business apps that require, sustained resource demand (imagine on-demand video services that need to serve up popular content like a series premier), many concurrent request (example would be supporting ticket sales for a major artists where an arena sells out in 3 minutes), or predictable latency (when your app can only require a certain amount of lag to deliver content). The limited preview for the new Premium offer will come online in a few weeks. Existing Azure customers will receive an email notification when the preview is ready.   14. SQL Server 2014 enable new hybrid cloud solutions that can help you reduce CAPEX and OPEX while improving things like DR. Lets take a look at the first hybrid scenario enabled, which is the ability to backup your on-premises database to Windows Azure and do this in an easy and efficient manner. You can enable policy based backup directly to Azure Storage and all you need is the URL and storage key. The backup is policy based and at an instance level meaning all of your databases within the instance follow the policy set and the backup can be implemented both manually or automated. In addition you gain the benefits of Windows Azure storage which offers Geo Replication that replicates the backups stored in multiple datacenters so you have even better DR for your backups. Also in the case of an on-premises failure you can restore the backups in Windows Azure Virtual Machines. <Click to see Cloud HA Diagram>: You can also enable an even better disaster recovery scenario with lower RTO (recovery time objective) and better RPO (recovery point objective) over the backup with the Cloud HA scenario. In this scenario you are can now with SQL Server 2014 add asynchronous replicas to Windows Azure Virtual Machines and do them simply with an Add Replica wizard that makes it a point and click experience directly in SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio). As soon as a transaction is committed on-premises it is sent asynchronously to the Windows Azure replica. We still recommend you keep your synchronous replica on-premises, but by having the additional replicas in Windows Azure again you gain improved DR and can reduce your CAPEX and OPEX costs of physically maintiaing additional hardware in additional data centers. Also the replicas in Azure can be efficiently utilized to take care of read functionality like BI reporting or also utilized for doing backups, speeding up the backup to Azure process as the secondary is in Azure already. Finally you can create additional hybrid application scenarios by extending your on-premises applications to Windows Azure, much like Flavorus did to gain scale on demand in a cost effective manner.

For example a physical retailer could use their on-premises SQL Server and supporting infrastructure to continue to serve their physical retail transactions and utilize cloud Windows Azure infrastructure services to support online sales. In this example scenario the on-premise domain controller is being utilized to authenticate all users both on-premises and cloud and it is using a secure VPN tunnel to connect with the cloud instances. Also you can the Linked Server feature in SQL Server to make a secure connection between two instances of SQL Server and pass a transaction or Query from one SQL Server to another regardless of whether it is on-premises or in the cloud. So for example you may choose to update your on-premises data warehouse once you have sold an item in the cloud to deplete inventory. With SQL Server 2014 we will also ship a new migration wizard that will help DBAs easily migrate their on-premises SQL Server instance to Windows Azure and again directly through SSMS as you can see in the screen shot there, point and click and you instance will be up and running in Azure in no time. Once you become familiar with Windows Azure you can start to take advantage of the Windows Azure Virtual Machine to run many scenarios in the cloud including fast dev/test of your SQL Server applications, moving existing applications, doing hybrid scenarios like we talked about, BI scenarios in the cloud because you have full SQL Server functionality including all of the BI services. In addition you have full control over the VM so if you want to put your coroporate anti-virus on the VM you can. Once you have become comfortable with the Windows Azure environment you can take advantage of Windows Azure SQL Database service offering that will speed development of your new database application even faster because you don’t have to manage the database, it is a service, you don’t have to patch the OS or database we take care of that, all you do is develop your application using the service. The SQL Database service also has unique cloud features like dynamic scalability of the database using Federations like Flavorus did to achieve their business goals. In addition this database service also offers an SLA for the database running inside the VM and you don’t have think about setting up high availability because it is built-in to the database service by default. This is where we see cloud applications doing fast development, less maintenance and faster time to market.
