A movement in Barcelona called Modernisme expressed itself through art, architecture and literature between 1850-1900. It emphasized Catalan culture and was influenced by trends in Paris. Ramon Casas was a Spanish painter who helped establish Modernisme. His painting "La Càrrega" depicted the violent suppression of a 1902 general strike in Barcelona by government cavalry. The strike was part of widespread social unrest in the city fueled by industrialization, unemployment and the rise of organized labor.
