Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. In this presentation I will be
explaining thirteen key terms for
that are used regular in radio news
bulletins.
Though out the rest of my blog,
where I will be creating my own
five minuet radio broadcast with a
group, I will be using these key
terms regularly to explain and
distinguish the different
conventions that I will be using in
my radio bulletin.
3. 1. Jingle:
-This is a short piece of music that introduces the news bulletin.
-It usually has the name of the station.
-Also played before other segments of a radio broadcast.
2. Intro:
-This is the news reader’s introduction.
-Generally involves a greeting, a time check and the -news
reader’s name.
3. Copy story:
-The most basic type of news story.
-Three or four simple sentences which tell the whole story.
-Has no additional audio.
-Used for less important stories.
4. 4. Cue:
- An introduction to a story that there will be addition audio with.
-Two simple sentences.
5. …Clip:
- Cue and clip.
- It is sometimes called a ‘cut’.
- 15 to 20 second piece of pre-recorded audio taken from an
interview with someone related to the story, e.g. and eyewitness.
- It provides addition information to the story.
6. …Voicer:
- Cue and voicer.
- Sometimes called a voice-piece.
- 30 to 40 seconds of another reporter.
- Provides more information.
5. 7. …Vox pop:
- Cue and vox pop.
- Short for ‘vox populi’ = ‘voice of the people’.
- 15 to 20 seconds featuring 4 to 5 different voices.
- Illustrating a story and gives the opinions of the general public.
- Usually a mix of male and female, unless it is a story related to
one particular gender.
- used mainly in light-hearted stories.
8. …Two-way:
- Cue and two-way.
- Used in longer bulletins
- Like a mini interview between the news reader and a reporter.
- Often live and used in breaking news.
6. 9. …Wrap:
- Cue and wrap
- This is a combination of a clip and a voicer.
- The reporter reads a voicer but embedded with in a clip.
- 40 to 50 seconds.
10. O.B:
- Stands for ‘outside broadcast”.
- Some stations have an O.B truck or van which satellite links to
the station and allows them to broadcast live.
- Usually live however can be pre-recorded.
- mobile phone technology is making it much easier for reporters
to record an O.B.
11. Back-anno:
- stands for ‘back-announcement’.
- Used after a long piece of audio.
-Read by the newsreader.
7. 12. Stab:
- Sometimes known as a sting.
- This is a very short version of a jingle and has no words in it.
- It is used to separate parts of the bulletin.
- Some radio stations have several different ones.
13. Bed:
- Music (with no words) that is played under the newsreader’s
talking.
- Has a fast-pace and an intense beat.
- Usually found in sports news or on stations that are aimed at the
younger generations.
14. S.O.C:
-Stands for ‘standard out Cue’.
- It is the bit at the end of the report that directs you to their
website/social media pages and tells you when the next news
bulletin will be.
