The study of medical laboratory technology enables the acquisition of knowledge and skills
that are in compliance with the requirements of modern clinical studies applicable to the
preservation and improvement of human health. The rapid development of new
technologies requires the permanent, professional and scientific training of personnel who
will use this technology in their work. Ethical and moral principles necessary for collaboration
among users, colleagues and other health professionals are nurtured during the program of
study.
Laboratory technologies currently consist of four home areas: chemical and biochemical
laboratory technologies, morphological laboratory technologies in hematology and
cytodiagnostics, microbiological laboratory technologies and experimental laboratory
technologies. Individuals with expertise in these areas are prepared to work on complex
analytical procedures enabling them to conduct research in the field of clinical chemistry,
laboratory hematology, bacteriology, parasitology, virology, mycology, immunology,
cytology, histopathology, transfusiology, experimental and nuclear medicine, and other
areas of laboratory diagnostics. The course is multidisciplinary, and acquired knowledge and
skills allow students to understand the pathophysiology and etiology of diseases, the use of
some of these technologies for diagnostic purposes, and monitoring patients’ treatment.
Thus, they become irreplaceable associates of medical teams in the implementation of
clinical and scientific activities. Specialists with this profile have:
- relevant knowledge and skills for the introduction, understanding, and
evaluation of advanced techniques and methods applicable in the
professional and scientific field of laboratory medicine
- the ability to conduct and ensure quality control,
- appropriate ethical and professional competences to work with patients and
human biological material, and to work in biomedical research

08/01/2004–08/21/2008 Laboratory Technician
Secondary Medical School, Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
This program encompasses the education of laboratory technicians in the field of health
care in secondary education as established by the law, and aims to assist students in
acquiring the knowledge and skills that will enable them to perform duties in the
implementation of preventive health care. The profession of laboratory technician (LT) does
not require direct work with patients, except when taking material for analysis. The work of
an LT is reduced to work in the laboratory with biological material. Permanent contact with
biological material requires skill, knowledge, and above all, accuracy. Today's laboratories
are computerized and automatic. Therefore, laboratory technicians use modern appliances.
This handling consists of their standardization and work on these appliances, as well as their
maintenance. Upon completing their education, students can be employed in all medical
laboratories and laboratories responsible for food safety (for example, they can be found in
factories where food is produced).
