5. Summary of Research About 5 million American senior citizens do not receive enough to eat (Booth, 2010) 16% of seniors over the age 65 consume less than 1,000 calories per day (Evans, 2005) Malnutrition is caused by physical limitations, fixed incomes, medications (Beattie, 2009)

Summary of Research Physical disabilities Affects their ability to shop for food and prepare meals Ability to stand for long periods of time Dentures- eating properly Handicapped individuals-safe cooking and cleaning Opening canned goods, cut fruit/vegetables * Makes food unappealing to seniors and leads to further malnourishment

Community Connection Nursing homes Most residents in assisted living homes are malnourished Homes need to keep residents diets in mind Local food program services Meals on Wheels Making organizations aware of this problem can help them supply meals that are adequately nutritious and nutrient specific to the patients needs.
