If all of the world´s cultural heritage (sports, music,
fashion, architecture, literature, painting, etc..) was
contained in a time capsule, what would you include to
demonstrate the legacy of your country?
As India is a nation of diverse cultures, languages, festivals,
traditions, people, etc. A time capsule would not be sufficient to
show the legacy of my country India.
-Shubham Sachin Parakh
Facts
• India ranks 7th in the world in terms of area.
• India is the 2nd most populated country having almost 1.2
billion people and the most populous democracy in the world.
• It is the 2nd largest standing army in the world, with
1,237,117 active troops and 990,960 reserve troops.
• There are 29 States and 7 Union Territories in India.
• Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism, is one of the four
major religions(Dharma) originated in India
The legacy can be demonstrated by showing:
• Languages & Literature
• Art and Sculpture
• Architecture
• Festivals
• Food and Spices
• Marriage
• Music and Dance
• Sports
• And many more…
Languages & Literature
Languages:
• India being a multi religious country, there are multiple
languages spoken in India.
• The total number of mother tongues spoken in India is 1,652.
However India has 22 official languages.
• The 2 official languages at national level are English and
Hindi.
Literature:
• India has composed great epics such as the Ramayana and
the Mahabharata, the dramas of Kalidas such as
Abhijnanasakuntalam and poetry such as Mahakavya all
written in Sanskrit.
• Some of the famous devotional poets are Guru Nanak,
Tulsidas, Kabir.
• India has a strong history in the field of literature.
Art and Sculpture
The art of India can be classified into several time periods
each of them reflecting particular religious, political and
cultural developments.
• Painting in India: The oldest wall or cave paintings of
historical period have been preserved in Ajanta Caves from
2nd century BC. The most significant frescoes prehistoric
time's period are located in Ajanta Caves, Bagh Caves, Ellora
Caves, etc.
• Visual art and Sculpture in India: The great artist
Rabanindranath Tagore is called as the father of Modern
Indian art. The earliest Indian religion to motivate major
creative monuments was Buddhism. Soon after the Buddhists
initiated the rock-cut caves, Hindus and Jains started to
imitate them. Indian rock art has continuously evolved, since
the first rock-cut caves, to suit different purposes, social and
religious contexts, and regional differences.
Architecture
One of the most famous achievements of Indian civilization is
undoubtedly its architecture. Indian architecture, which has evolved
through centuries, is the result of socio-economic and geographical
conditions. Different types of Indian architectural styles includes:
Colonial Architecture, Indo Islamic Architecture, Ancient Architecture,
Cave Architecture, Temple Architecture. Some of the famous
Architectures are:
• Mughal tombs of sandstone and marble show Persian influence.
• The Red Fort at Agra (1565–74)
• The walled city of Fatehpur Sikri (1569–74
• Taj Mahal, built as a tomb for Queen Mumtaz Mahal by Shah Jahan
(1628–58) is the symbol of love. It is one of the 7 wonders of the
world.
Festivals
India is multi-cultural and multi-religious society. It
celebrates festivals of various religions. Many states and
religions have different festivals depending on their
religions. Some of the biggest fetivals of India are:
• Navratri
• Diwali
• Ganesh Chaturthi
• Baisakhi
• Holi
• Raksha Bandhan
• Dussehra
• Ramadan.
Food and Spices
• India is known for its love for food and spices. India is the
worlds second largest producer of food after china.
• One of the things that people find intimidating about cooking
Indian food is the vast array of spices used — both whole and
ground, which are often combined into complex spice mixes.
Some of the famous Indian Spices are cardamom, clove,
black pepper, cumin, coriander, mustard seeds, fenugrik,
turmeric, chili pepper, saffron, etc.
• Indian cuisine encompasses a wide variety of regional and
traditional cuisines, often depending on a particular state.
Staple food of Indian Cuisine include pearl millet (bajra), rice,
whole-wheat flour (atta), and a variety of dals (lentils) such as
masoor (often red letils). Toor (pigeon peas), urad (black
gram) and moong (mung beans).
Marriage
• In India, arranged marriages still remain the significantly
favored route for Indians to enter into matrimony. In case of
an arranged marriage, parents and other relatives decide on a
life partner that they regard appropriate for their child. Various
factors are kept in mind, different for boys and girls, while
searching for a suitable match to connect their names with.
It’s a tradition Indians find hard to part with. Indeed, even
today in the 21st Century, around 85 % Indians prefer to
marry the boy or girl chosen by their families, rather than
choosing their life accomplices themselves.
Music and Dance
• The music of India includes multiple varieties of religious-folk,
pop and classical music.
• There are many well-known dance forms like:
1) Kuchipudi- Andhra Prades
2) Bharatanatyam- Tamil Nadu
3) Bhangra- Punjab
4) Ghoomar- Rajasthan
5) Garba- Gujrat
6) Lavani- Maharashtra
Sports
• India has a great tradition of sports, and is greatly influenced
by the British presence in India in the 18th and 19th century.
• India is also one of the few countries that have popularity of
their indigenous games among its people. Games like gilli-
danda, kabaddi, pehlwani and kho kho, etc.
• Some of the oldest forms of martial arts like musti yuddha,
kalerippayattu, silambam as well as marma adi are originated
in India.
• India also have a few board games, most popular of which is
the chaturanga, believed to be the origin of modern chess.
• However, modern games have also taken over the Indian
scene with Cricket being the most popular.
• India also have been part of the Olympic Games since 1900
and winning an Olympic medal right off the bat when Norma
Pritchard took two silver medals in athletics when in the 200
meter dash and the 200 meters hurdles
India triumphs in maiden Mars
mission, sets record in space race
Conclusion
• India is a land of different cultures, heritages, many languages
and religions. Despite the differences our India is united in its
diversity.
• The culture of India is pluralistic, multilingual and multi-ethnic.
• So I conclude that India is a very incredible and mystical —
yet to be discovered. Even though it has things like corruption
which we have to work towards getting rid off, one day we will
become the best and I love my India.
• We are proud to be Indians.
THANK YOU!!!
