HOW DOES A MUSIC VIDEO
PROVIDE A PLATFORM FOR AN
ARTIST TO REINVENT
HIMSELF/HERSELF TO A TARGET
AUDIENCE?
Institution and Audience
 The role the record label play in
promoting the new Justin Bieber is that
they are reforming him to be seen as
an adult. Within his music video with
Skrillex, inspiration seems to be taken
from the artist Sam Taylor Wood as lots
of colours are used over his face and
around him whilst he is on a dark
background. This shows that he wants
to be seen as more professional as this
music video has connotations with art.
Genre and Narrative
Skrillex and Diplo - "Where Are Ü Now" with Justin Bieber
 Goodwin's theory states that the relationship between lyrics and visuals is either
illustrative, amplified or disjunctive. In this music video, the relationship between
lyrics and visuals is disjunctive. It shows him with multiple graphics drawn around
him which doesn’t relate to him asking where someone is when he needs them.
This shows that this music video was created with a purpose of reforming his star
image.
 The idea of notion of looking is also used within this music video. He is shown on
the stills in the art gallery and then it shows him in the stills. This therefore means
the audience see him in two different media. Voyeurism is also a key feature within
this music video as the audience are constantly looking at Justin Bieber.
 This shows that this music video is conventional of Goodwin’s theory.
Justin Bieber - What Do You Mean?
 Dyer’s theory states that there are 2 key paradoxes. The first paradox is that the
singer is simultaneously ordinary yet extraordinary. This can be seen in this music
video as he is in ordinary places such as a bedroom and a skate park, however he
is still extraordinary due to the events going on and how he manages to escape
them. The second paradox is that the singer is simultaneously present yet absent.
This is not shown within this music video as he is constantly the focus of the shots.
This shows that this music video is based around reforming him into a different
person as to what people already see him as.
 Todorov’s theory states that every narrative starts with an equilibrium. The
equilibrium in this music video is Justin Bieber with his girlfriend in the bedroom.
This equilibrium then gets disrupted by a conflict which creates the disequilibrium.
In this music video, the disequilibrium is created by the men in the masks
kidnapping Justin and his girlfriend. However this all gets resolved at the end when
there is a new equilibrium of them having fun in the skate park with their friends.
This shows that this music video is conforms to Todorov’s theory.
Media Language
Skrillex and Diplo - "Where Are Ü Now" with
Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber - What Do You Mean?
• The purpose of this video is to relate Justin to
art. This is so he is taken more seriously as an
artist as a way of reforming his image.
• The visual techniques used to do this are a lot
of graphics that have been done in post-
production.
• The editing shows why these effects have
been included. It shows each frame of his
music video in a gallery and different members
of the public are allowed to draw around it. This
further reinforces his connection to art.
• Within the camera work there are lots of close
ups. When the graphics are around him, the
camera work is very simplistic and doesn’t cut
very often as the focus of the video is the
graphics and Justin Bieber.
• The purpose of this video was to show Justin
as more of an adult. It includes adult content
which shows he’s trying to increase the age of
his target audience.
• The mise-en-scene of the music video is
effective in making him seem like more of an
adult. He is shown with a woman who’s
costume is her underwear in the beginning part
of the music video. This therefore puts him in
an adult situation which automatically will
increase the age of his audience for this music
video. His costume, again, is very simplistic
and ordinary with just a white t-shirt and
sometimes a black hoodie. This makes him
more relatable to his target audience.
• The mise-en-scene is also quite
simplistic. His costume is a white t-
shirt with an unbuttoned shirt over
the top. This makes him seem
quite ordinary but also makes him
quite appealing for girls. It also isn’t
set on location. It does done in a
studio with a black background.
The only other location shown is
the art gallery to show him more as
art.
• In the start of the music video he
has props of lots of money and a
lighter. These are associated with
more adult activities so further
reinforce him as an adult.
• This music video is edited so it has
continuity. It is a narrative based
music video so needs continuity to
make sense.
• The camera work often does close
ups of his face to show the music
video is based around him and his
transformation.
Representation
Skrillex and Diplo - "Where Are Ü Now" with Justin Bieber
• Justin Bieber is presented as an artist to have a star image
as he is the meta narrative of this video; starring in the
majority of shots.
• The artist is wearing ordinary, casual clothes making him
relatable which is evident in video Dyer’s theory
• The ideological discourse of the is that age is represented
negatively as a number of graffiti like shots are placed over
the video of Justin. However, this could also be seen in a
negotiated reading that youth are creative and artistic due to
the imaginative collage seen. As Justin is the only person
featuring in the video, the only group represented is young
male. It represents him as a creative individual who has
independence.
Justin Bieber - What Do You Mean?
• The artist is represented in this video to be a youth who is
negatively represented as at the beginning of the video he
is standing on a street corner, handing over money to an
older man. This looks suspiciously like a drug deal.
• Dyer’s star persona for the artist is not created, and he is
made to look like an ordinary, male youth.
• The ideological discourse for the video is created through
Toderov’s equilibrium theory. The video has a
heteronormative discourse and does not challenge
traditional stereotypes.
• The artist is also feautured lip synching infront of a graffiti
covered wall, defining him as contemporary, trendy artist.
