Dear
Your ongoing support for Just Food is making it possible for families in New York City’s
most vulnerable communities to access fresh, sustainably-grown food. Thank you!
I am honored to be a Board member of Just Food. And, while I have been a community
gardener and activist for years, it is the work of this important organization that has
helped me to think beyond hunger and health to the underlying issues of social justice
and equity that impact our food system.
Supporting Just Food means supporting families.
When no one else believed the South Bronx was ready, Just Food stepped up to help
me and my fellow gardeners start a farmers’ market. Twelve years later, our market is
going strong and—thanks to donors like you—Just Food’s network of 27 community-run
farmers’ markets supply healthy, locally-grown food to more than 100,000 New Yorkers in
underserved areas.
Fast food restaurants still dominate my neighborhood. But, on Tuesday mornings, the
corner of East Tremont and Lafontaine Avenue transforms into a vibrant community
space. People come to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, swap cooking tips, and catch up
on neighborhood news.
Nobody walks away from La Familia Verde Farmer’s Market without at least an apple,
whether they have the money to pay or not.
Everyone has the right to fresh, healthy food.

2. Supporting Just Food means supporting community.
Just Food supports communities and community-driven solutions by asking the
critical questions. What does your community need? What solution do you envision?
What can we do to help?
Thanks to this unique bottom-up approach, nearly a quarter million people access
healthy, locally-grown food each year and more and more New Yorkers are cooking,
growing their own food, and advocating for their communities.
For two decades, Just Food has worked hand-in-hand with New Yorkers like you and me
to increase access to healthy foods; to provide viable markets for urban and regional
farmers; and to build a more just, sustainable, and healthy city.
Please help us ensure that all New Yorkers have access to good food.
Sincerely,
Karen Washington
