2. M
ilbridge is a small town with a big heart. Stroll through town and you’ll stumble on
24 pocket gardens with flourishing vegetables free to all, the work of Incredible
Edible Milbridge, whose motto is “If it’s ripe, pick it!”
Incredible Edible Milbridge is led by Executive Director Chris Kuhni. This nurse practitioner
bluntly describes the need behind the gardens. “We have loads of patients with diabetes, high
blood pressure and cholesterol, obesity, and they were telling me they couldn’t afford fresh
vegetables. And Milbridge has a lot of skilled gardeners!”
One such is Lead Gardener Janis Lesbines, who says, “Our volunteers are passionate—and so
are the people here. Every last bit of produce gets consumed.” The program has already jumped
to area schools, with raised beds at the high school, composting for kindergartners, and
workshops for adults, too.
When four-and-a-half acres right downtown on the Narraguagus River came up for sale, the
women approached MCHT, and we acted quickly to conserve this land to help fulfill their
dream. “There’s going to be a very large walking track, orchards, gardens.” Kuhni says
enthusiastically. “There really isn’t a good place to walk in Milbridge, and very few places where
you can enjoy the water. Wow! I see gardeners, people picking fruits and vegetables, joggers and
parents with kids, maybe even a small amphitheater….”A beautiful protected spot on the coast to grow
vegetables and community spirit.
“Plant a garden, grow
a community.”
