Clarissa Harlowe Barton founded the Red
Cross on May 21, 1881. She was a hospital
nurse in the American Civil War and was a
teacher patent clerk.

The Red Cross aids to people who have been
hit with a major disaster like hurricanes,
tornadoes, tsunamis, fires, or any man made
disaster
4. Leader
Gail J McGovern joined the Red cross as a
president and CEO in 2008. She has been a
very strong leader and has made the Red
Cross the leading emergency response and
blood services organization.

On April 9th, 2013, the Red Cross responded to
13 disasters in 24 hours each time providing
food, clothing, shelter, counseling, and comfort
to more than 250 people.

In July 2013, the Red Cross assisted 200
people and responded to seven disasters in a
five day span. The Red Cross is always ready
for anything and is willing to go to any cause to
help those in need.

To thank all of the volunteers and workers, the
Red Cross has a week called National
Volunteer Week. This is a week that honors all
those who have donated and help respond to
the disasters. This shows the workers and
volunteers that they are appreciated and puts
smiles on all of their faces.
