2. About Just Harvest
● Just Harvest is a local nonprofit dedicated
to poverty awareness and alleviation, that
provides low-income families with free help
applying for government benefits, preparing
taxes, and accessing other resources.
3. About the Summer Food Program
● Nearly 18 million children depend on school
lunches
● The USDA summer service food program
provides free food to kids when school is
out of session
● Summer food sites may be located in
schools, churches, and community centers
in low-income communities
4. Goals
● Get local businesses to hang flyers
advertising the USDA Summer Food Program
● Get churches and organizations to start new
summer food programs
● Start a social media campaign on Twitter to
advertise the program
5. Dealing with Ambiguity
● Since it is hard to get “official”
advertisements approved by government
higher-ups, we had to think outside the box
and created the Twitter account
“Pitt4SummerFood” to spread the word
8. Social Media Reach
● Poster retweeted by Mayor Bill Peduto (29.2
k followers), Pittsburgh Farm to Table (7.4
k), the Pittsburgh Food Bank (6.4k), the
Clairton School District (500) and many
other community members and
organizations!
9. Other Media Coverage
● WPTS is airing two PSAs advertising the
program, one reaching out to potential
sponsors and one to kids and parents
