- 2. Mission All children and families in DuPage County will achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Vision FORWARD will lead DuPage County, through a broad-based community coalition, in promoting effective and sustainable policy, system, and environmental strategies for children and families to achieve a healthy weight.
- 3. Goals 1. Understand theprevalence in persons who are overweight and obese in DuPage County. 2. Understand the factors contributing to obesity within DuPage County Communities. 3. Effect person level change around overweight and obesity through policy, system, and environmental change. 4. Requirements For Partnership: Tobecome a partner of the Healthy Lombard Initiative, the interested Group, Business, Organization, or Individual is asked to actively endorse the purpose of Healthy Lombard by : 1. Participating in Quarterly planning meetings 2. Supporting the Mission of Healthy Lombard by doing at least one of the following: (a) providing a service or activity that addresses the elimination of Childhood Obesity and promotes Healthy Living, (b) by volunteering to assist with items identified under letter “a,” or (c) providing financial support

- #7 Then we sought to understand community barriers by region and conducted the CHILI—55 in 5 communities

- #9 Engage DuPage County in designing a network of care and support to help children and families navigate and access a multi-sectoral system to control and reduce obesity. Primary care physicians and school nurses will be able to refer high risk patients into a case-management system that will link them to community based obesity prevention resources. Consider innovative strategies such as Pro-Active Kids, We Go and Learning Readiness PE as tools, resources and interventions. Conduct preschool assessments to study identify barriers to care and interventions-environmental, nutritional and physical activity Use community linkages, the YMCA and neighborhood resource centersto deliver accessible solutions
- #10 Help schools and childcare facilities to prepare for the new Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act. Engage the ROE and 42 DuPage County School Districts, food service contractors, food banks and pantries, and school wellness staff in a dialog to develop steps and plans. Review bid packages used by our neighbors in Chicago Public Schools and other school districts to develop recommendations for DuPage. Develop measurable outcomes such as reduced BMI rates, increase in fruit and vegetable consumption among school-aged children, and/or reduce sodium intake. Assist in improving school vending and competitive food options (to current IOM recommendations).
- #11 Increase physical activity through community design. Promote the foundation of the DuPage County trail system by developing a campaign to promote its use and safety Use the CHILI tool to identify local gaps to inform a county-wide plan for improving active transportation locally. Engage builders, zoning, mayors and managers and parks and recreation persons in a dialog to identify critical steps and opportunities. Engage Active Transportation Alliance in a dialog to further study options, develop an educational campaign (talking points/slide presentation) to drive possible change and funding for funding large scale active transportation projects. Consider a summit to educate and motivate for change.
- #13 Objective 1 (14 votes) – Increase Physical Activity Strategy #2 (10 votes) –Increase availability of facilities for open gyms , and indoor walking for all age groups; Encourage walking clubs for all age groups. Strategy #4 (7 votes – 2 way tie) – Share curriculum, physical activity equipment, and resources across sectors .
- #14 Objective 2 (12 votes) – Increase Education and Awareness Strategy #3 (9 votes- 3 way tie) –Collaborate with ILNET, WSDA, and Y-USA to bring educational resou rces to private and public afterschool, preschool, childcare providers, school/PTA representatives, parents, and local food pantries. Address special needs of Spanish speaking population with translations whenever possible
- #15 Objective 3 (9 votes) – Promote Active Transportation (Biking, Walking, Public Transportation Strategy #1 (11 votes) – Complete sidewalks and remove obstacles to facilitate biking or walking to important destinations such as to school, the pool, parks, trails, and the downtown. Strategy #3 (9 votes – 3 way tie) – Add bike lanes along main arterials to encourage biking to the commuter station; Utilize intergovernmental agency agreements where bike trails need to cross park district property; Designate painted bike lanes along common routes for children to travel such as along parks and schools and the pool; Bridge across tracks to access pool; Use signage to identify family bike trails (Lilac Parkway); Lighting along Great Western Trail.
- #17 Healthy Eating and Activity Challenge - fall kick-off(similar to how the library does summer reading)create a passport that includes 1x time a week or month activity that they can go to and then at the end there would be a drawing for exciting prizes that are promoting healthy eating and physical activity in Elmhurst.
- #18 2. Fitness kit Events - create free monthly events with different organizations and companies where we utilize the fitness kit the YMCA will provide on a check-out basis where the community can come and play as a family utilizing this equipment that you would not find anywhere else.
- #19 Safe route to schools marketing campaign to increase a bike/walk school days throughout the year and make it a challenge with prizes from healthy food options in Elmhurst- Safe Routes To School (SRTS) Program supports projects and programs that enable and encourage walking and bicycling to and from school.
- #21 Big Idea 1: Increase fresh fruit and vegetable consumption in youth Strategy: Help afterschool programs increase their ability to serve fresh fruits and vegetables by working with current school food providers to prepare and deliver snacks. Use current refrigeration in all schools.
- #22 Big Idea 2: Increase physical activity in youth Strategy: Increase amount of physical activity time in elementary schools by assisting in facilitation of before school exercise programs.
- #23 Big Idea 3: Increase health education opportunities in low income neighborhoods. Strategy: Work with local groups (resource centers, churches, etc.) to help provide programs to low income neighborhoods such as cooking classes, nutrition, menu planning and exercise opportunities.
- #25 Big Idea 1: Increase physical activity in youth Strategy: Facilitate alternative to intermural sports (for students not involved in school sponsored teams) and activities that have been cancelled from schools due to budget cuts.
- #26 Big Idea 2: Increase workplace wellness opportunities Strategy: Assist in creation and promotion of free work place wellness resources for businesses in the community in conjunction with the Y corporate membership program.
- #27 Big Idea 3: Increase access to healthy food options Strategy: Create program to reward local restaurant and grocery stores for providing healthy options and nutritional information
- #29 Main Focus: System, Policy, and Environmental Changes 1. Built Environment: Goal: Share with the community the Downers Grove CHLI findings and advocate for and support the Village of Downers Grove comprehensive plan to install sidewalks and bike paths in new developments and throughout the community. Strategies: Present the findings to the Village Council Remain vocal advocates for sidewalks and bike paths Submit an article (our process and findings) to the Downers Grove Patch, Neighbors, Trib Local, The Reporter, The Bugle and other local publications Goal: Increase public transportation options especially for youth and seniors. Without a car, these two segments of the population do not have frequent or convenient access to public transportation, grocery stores, or to physical activities (parks, YMCA, Park District, skate parks, etc.). Strategies Work with FORWARD county-wide leaders to improve PACE and other transportation options.

Physical Activity: Goal: Increase the opportunities available to non-competitive athletes (sports and recreation activities) by working closing with the public schools, the Park District, the YMCA and other physical activity providers. Strategies Work in partnership with District 99 as they implement their strategic plan, specifically the item related to intramural sports. Collectively identify space availability in the community for intramural sports Secure funding (scholarships, program development dollars) to make these programs affordable to all Identify options to transport children to and from the schools or to their neighborhoods Focus on preteens and teens, where our findings show this is the age in which children move from a healthy weight to being at risk of or being overweight.

Healthy Eating: Goal: Increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables to all members of the community by addressing local fruit stands, downtown market activities and community garden availability. Strategies: Work with the FORWARD team to advocate for more lenient standards to set up road stands or local produce stands More aggressively promote healthy living activities and messages at farmers markets, in community gatherings and in other areas where the community gathers for healthy eating and physical activity. Partner with local grocery stores to help educate consumers on healthier food options

- #41 So, PR Gal/Kiwanian invited everyone she shared the idea with to a FREER Breakfast meeting. She was happily surprised they all came.She explained her research and asked if those present would be interested in a group venture. Not knowing cost - she suggested a 2nd meeting in January.

- #44 The Best Buy web location was a Cloud Site. Not only did they provide the site, Cloud also provide a mentor. The Cloud site led to a facebook, a twitter and a You Tube site.
