Collect for the Day: God of power and mercy, you call us
once again to celebrate the coming of your Son. Remove
those things which hinder love of you, that when he comes,
he may find us waiting in awe and wonder for him who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
for ever. Amen.
Lighting the Advent Wreath
Last Sunday we lit the candles for peace and hope. The third
candle of our Advent wreath is the candle of joy. When the
angel Gabriel told Mary that a special child would be born to
her she was filled with joy - she sang a song that began with the
words, " My soul magnifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God
my Saviour." We light the candle of joy to remind us that when
Jesus is born in us we have joy. Joy is like a light shining in a
3. dark place. As we look at this candle we celebrate the joy we
find in Jesus Christ.
Let us pray: Thank you God for the joy you give us. We ask that
as we wait for all your promises to come true, and for Christ to
come again, that you would remain present to us. Help us to
share your joy with each other. Amen

The Story of God’s People
A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ZEPHANIA 3: 14–20
Read by Sue Ann Elite
Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult
with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken
away the judgements against you, he has turned away your
enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall
fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The
Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory;
he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his
love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of
festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not
bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that
time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will
change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At
that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you;
for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples
of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says
the Lord.
4. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.
ISAIAH 12: 2-6 (read responsively)
Surely, it is God who saves me; *
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, *
and he will be my Savior.
Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing *
from the springs of salvation.
And on that day you shall say, *
Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;
Make his deeds known among the peoples; *
see that they remember that his Name is exalted.
Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, *
and this is known in all the world.
Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, *
for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.
A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS 4: 4-7
Read by Darryl Nakamoto
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your
gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not
worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known
to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation
Choir: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
5. All: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
Cantor: You who sit enthroned between the cherubim
shine forth: Awaken your might / come and save
us.
Gospeller: The Lord be with you.
All: And with thy spirit.
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel according to Luke 3: 7-18.
All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.
John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him,
“You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath
to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say
to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell
you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to
Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees;
every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down
and thrown into the fire.” And the crowds asked him, “What
then should we do?” In reply he said to them, “Whoever has
two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever
has food must do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be
baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?”
He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed
for you.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we
do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by
threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”
As the people were filled with expectation, and all were
questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might
be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize
you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming;
I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is
in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat
into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable
6. fire.” So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good
news to the people.
The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

We Offer Our Gifts to God
Offertory Hymn “Mine eyes have seen the glory”
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the
Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of
wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible
swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
(Chorus)
Glory, glory hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the
sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and
me:
7. As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men
free,
While God is marching on.
(Chorus)
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never
call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His
judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my
feet!
Our God is marching on.
(Chorus)
He is coming like the glory of the morning on the
wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the
brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of
Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.
(Chorus)
Prayer over the Gifts: God of hope, renew in us the joy of
your salvation and make us a living sacrifice to you, for the
sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Eucharist: God’s Spirit Transforms Our Gifts
“People of all ages and denominations who are baptized into Christ
are invited and encouraged to share in communion. If you will not be
receiving bread and wine, we would be pleased if you would join us at
the Lord’s Table for a blessing.”

8. The Lord’s Prayer (said) p. 245
The Breaking of the Bread p. 212
Celebrant: God of promise,
you prepare a banquet for us in your kingdom.
All: Happy are those who are called

Communion Hymn 96 “Creator of the stars of night”
Communion Motet: Adam lay ybounden – Howard Skempton
Adam lay ybounden,
Bounden in a bond;
Four thousand winter
Thought he not too long.
And all was for an apple,
An apple that he took,
As clerkës finden written
In their book.
Nor had one apple taken been,
The apple taken been,
Then had never Our Lady
A-been heaven's queen.
Blessed be the time
That apple taken was.
Therefore we may singen
Deo gratias!
Prayer after Communion: Faithful God, we thank you for
feeding us with this heavenly banquet. Help us always to
hear the prophet’s call to turn our hearts to you; in the
name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Music Notes:
“Adam lay ybounden” is a macaronic (meaning it has a mix of
Latin and English words) poem by an unknown author, dating
from around 1400. Several composers have set this text to
music, one of the more recent being Englishman Howard
Skempton (born 1947). His is a simple setting of this medieval
Advent carol which has great impact in its originality; the style
is controlled, almost austere, and the effect is hypnotic. It is a
perhaps unsettling but poignant piece of music.
Here is a very loose interpretation of the old English:
Adam's (i.e.man's) sin enchained him for four thousand years
(the accepted time
from creation to Jesus' birth.)
He did not think it was too long to wait.
And all this was because of the apple Adam took,
as scribes have recorded in Holy Scripture.
If the apple had never been taken,
then Mary would never have become Heaven's Queen.
Blessed then be that apple's theft (because it ultimately brought
salvation.)
Therefore we must sing, thanks be to God!
