Five Reasons Why Outdoor Exercise is Better Than the Gym
With all these emerging diets and fitness trends, being in shape seems to be more
“in” than ever before. While sweating it out on the elliptical machine and curling those
dumbbells are effective, working out indoors is inferior compared to the great outdoors.
Here are five reasons why you should trade in your lifting gloves for sunscreen.
1. You’ll actually stick to it
First week: “This workout routine I’m doing is great! I’ll be bikini-ready in no time!”
Second week: “Eh, I’ve been pretty good, I deserve a break. I’ll start again next week.”
Third week: “What workout?”
We’ve all done it, workouts are hard to maintain. Luckily, A UCSD study reveals that
people who work out outside are more likely to continue their routine and do it more
often. Additionally, finding a scenic view you can enjoy will keep you coming back.
Nature can be your biggest cheerleader.
2. It will make you happier
Studies show that spending more time outdoors lowers stress levels, but exercising
outdoors amplifies that even more. The fresh air adds to the endorphins already released
from exercising. Exercising outdoors also can improve self-confidence. In a gym full of
other people can be discouraging to people that aren’t too happy with their shape.
Outside, often times you are the only one around so it’s much more private.
3. You’ll see results quicker
No matter what setting you have it on, treadmill and elliptical machines do some of the
work for you, that’s just the way they have to work mechanically. Running on real
terrain will cause wind resistance that those machines can’t emulate. It’s also been
proven that body weight training is the most effective way to stay healthy. Weight lifting
machines are often fixed in certain positions and don’t allow for coordination between
other parts of the body. When you use your own body weight to train, you are almost
always targeting more than one muscle at a time. All of this will help you burn calories
and build muscle faster.
4. More money in your pocket
Gym memberships can run you anywhere between an average of $400-$800 a year.
Membership at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge only costs $45 a year and
includes many other perks.
5. Your body needs it
The sun provides you with the essential vitamin D that your body craves. Not only can
vitamin D lower blood pressure, but a deficiency in it can lead to bone loss and even
seasonal depression.

these people, however, are in need of more motivation to get fit.
According to a UCSD study, exercising outdoors has benefits beyond working out in a
