Working with XML and JSON-based data has never been easier, thanks to the latest functionality in FME 2016. We’ll demonstrate how to consume any XML, GML, and JSON data, from simple to complex. We’ll also show you how to write GML using the XSD.
The document discusses FME 2015 and beyond. It begins with a safe harbor statement noting that any forward-looking statements are subject to risks and uncertainties. The main sections discuss connecting, transforming, and automating data. Specific capabilities and examples are provided, such as supporting IFC file formats, writing 3D buildings from footprints, and converting models between Minecraft and SketchUp. Integration with web services and file storage is also covered. The presentation concludes by discussing tighter cloud integration and deployment options for FME Server.
XML is everywhere. It's used across the web, by devices, by sensors, and by many applications. It's also used to share data across organizations. We have a lot to thank XML for. However, it's complex nature can make it difficult to use.
Co-founder, Don Murray, and Strategic Expert, Dean Hintz, understand the potential of XML in data integration and automation. They are both passionate advocates for the format – and by the end of the webinar, you will be too!
In this special “marathon” webinar, learn about all things XML, and how FME makes it easy to access, leverage, transform and publish XML related datasets. In short, learn how FME enables you to get value from XML data faster than you imagined.
The document discusses the XML Forms Architecture (XFA) and summarizes its key features:
- XFA allows forms to be defined in XML, with templates defining the form's appearance, datasets containing data and descriptions, and dynamic rendering of filled forms.
- XFA-based forms are contained within a PDF file for rendering backgrounds and as the container for the XML data. This allows for "data-based dynamical documents".
- XFA provides benefits over static PDF forms like more flexibility and features, but sees slower adoption from viewers and a lack of available tools for working with the format.
- The document proposes building an XFA to PDF tool using iText to fill out and flatten X

2. Agenda
● JSON, XML, & GML
overview
● Easy XML
– Tree navigation
● Automatic JSON
– Auto schema scan
● Schemaless GML
– Reading GML / WFS
without a schema
3. Why JSON, XML, & GML?
• Commonly used in exchange formats,
open standards, web services
• Language of the web and REST APIs
• Supports loose integration across diverse
applications
• Critical for cross-platform and mobile
applications
4. JSON, XML, and GML in FME
• Read and write 40+
XML, GML, and JSON
based formats.
• Extract, format,
template, map,
update, and many
other transformations.
8. XML Reading
with Tree
Navigation
1. Add an XML Reader.
• Set Feature Paths
mode.
• Browse to source
XML data.
2. Select the node you
want to become a
feature type.
16. JSON Reading with Schema Scan
• No need to write JSON
Query
• Flattens JSON into features
• Geometry: GeoJSON or
OGCWKT formats
• JSON Query still available
when needed
19. GML / WFS Reading
Challenge:
GML is hard to read
without a schema.
Solution:
Ignore schema mode lets
you read almost any GML.
* Schema is still required to validate or write GML.
23. • Easier to extract value from XML, GML, and JSON.
• Tree navigation makes it easier to pick XML elements
and build workflows.
• Auto Schema Scan Mode means you can read JSON
without configuring anything.
• You don’t need a schema to read GML / WFS data if
you use Ignore Schema mode.
