This document contains a novel study assignment for the book Iqbal by Francesco D'Adamo. It includes 4 passages from chapter 7 and chapter 8 with instructions for the student to respond critically to passages 1 and 4, and to choose one of passages 2 or 3 to reflect on. For each passage, the student is asked to comment on the meaning or significance of the quote, and how it relates to characters' thoughts and feelings or makes them want to know more. There are many quotable passages from chapter 7 in Iqbal. Below are four
important quotes.

* PASSAGE 1
“It means that this kind of life isn’t right. We should return to our families; we
shouldn’t be chained to our looms and forced to work like slaves.” Page 50
RESPONSE: The significance of this quote it means that child labours should returned
back to their family because they deserve to learned not to work, to play with friends,
or relatives so instead of being chained they should be playing around having fun, and
more fun things to do if day returned back to their family(they were being chained to
the looms because they weren’t doing the right to make the carpet). (They have no
choice the boss would force to them to work or to be punished.)Iqbal said this quote
because he’s right they should be playing around not to worked, go to school, explore
around the city, like go to parks, go to other relatives house, and more.
PASSAGE 2
‘There was a precise rule among us: Never talk about the future. Not a single one of us
dared to say, “next summer,” or “in a year,” or, “when I’m grown up.” Oh yes, we

2. talked about things we liked to do, and we talked about the day our debt would be
cancelled. We talked that hope into the ground. But nobody really believed it. It was
sort of litany, a way to feel good. Otherwise what was left to us?’ Page 53
PASSAGE 3
“Fatima,” he said in a low voice, “next spring you and I are going to fly a kite.
Remember that, whatever happens.” Page 54
RESPONSE: PASSAGE 2
The significance of this quote means that there debt will be the same in the future it will
never change even though you have to worked hard everyday, so that’s why they never
talked about there future they think it’s going to be the same as always that their debt
will never be erase and they would stay at Hussain Khan because they don’t even know
where there family’s are. They talked about they wanted to do, like their debt would be
cancelled because they want to think the good side so they could forget horrible things
happen to them like their always tired, Hussain Khan always chained them in their
looms, they will always get some bruises, and more horrible things that Hussain Khan
got them do to. (The others would never talked about their future but only Iqbal who
keeps talking about their future, so he would always will be free, going to our family,
and more.) Fatima who said this quote because they don’t know what will happen next
would their debt will be cancelled, are they going to stay with Hussain Khan forever, and
more.
* Chapter 8 - PASSAGE 4
‘Before Iqbal’s arrival I had been resigned to my life. I couldn’t even imagine a
different one. Iqbal had sown the seeds of hope in all of us.’ Page 62
RESPONSE: The significance of this quote means that Iqbal showed them how to be
brave and stood up to what you believe in. So later on in chapter eight they finally
stood up what they believe in they all said that they all want go in the Tomb so they
tried to protect Maria from going into the Tomb. Fatima said this quote because she
thinks that her life was different now because of Iqbal’s arrival he showed her and other
kids how to be brave to stood up what you believe in. ( Iqbal planted a seed to get the
other kids to stand up for themselves and they did it in the chapter they stand up for
Maria.)
