  1. Hello everyone. I would like to share with you an approach that has helped me to banish angst, disappointment and frustration from retrospectives, leading to them becoming joyous events. Before we start with that thou, I would like to understand your experience with retrospectives…
  2. Who has experienced the highs of a retrospective where the team loudly vented their emotions? Please raise your hands. Did it feel powerful? It was for me. Was it uniting? It felt like we all really agreed it was an issue. Did it achieve lasting change? Mine certainly didn’t.
  3. Who has been involved in retrospectives, were the conversation went around in circles? Bending back on itself? Often going nowhere and using up a lot of time.
  4. Q: Have you felt like your retrospectives had turned into Groundhog Day? Start pumped up, huge emotional outlet, walk away feeling better, slowly feel worse and worse throughout the sprint, start all over again. Q: How did this make you feel? Did you feel frustrated? Did you feel disappointed? That was how I felt, and I wanted to right what seemed like a wrong.
  5. So I read and reflected and talked to people about how to make my retrospectives more effective. What I found, was that the biggest impediments to joyous retrospectives were: Not finding the root cause, and failing to implement actions afterwards.
  6. In my aim of effectively identifying root causes I learnt of the Five Whys and set out to use it. Who here has used the Five Whys? I will briefly explain it for those of you who have not heard or used it? …. Prior to using the five whys discussion in our retrospectives they would be peppered with wild emotions, gut feelings and I was constantly working to prevent circular discussions. Using the five whys did cut out some of the wild emotions and gut feelings, however the open discussions were still quiet messy.
  7. Eat own dog food, -> write out 5 whys on the board
  8. So started to write out the five why’s on a whiteboard, and use that to guide/track the discussion. This focused the conversations, and boosted shared understanding…
  9. I am going to take a tongue in check look at the UN Climate Change committee to help explain why Failing to find the root cause and failing to follow through are the two primary impediments to retrospectives that will bring joy to you and the people you work with…. Lets imagine that the Sebastian Ringardo has been nominated as the facilitator for this committee.   10. Lets see how it worked out for Sebastian… …. It seems the root cause is that too many cows exist due to farming. What should we do? Stop Farming and Cull the herd. All those in favour say I. I.

  16. Visualise the actions and regularly discuss their progress.
  17. The UN meets again, and happily reports they have stopped farming and culled the herd, significantly reducing the methane produced. However someone points out that temperatures are still increasing…. Sebastian thinks to him, there must be multiple causes, however the five whys only captured and addressed one of them.
  18. Life is really simple What I found was the most Five Why discussions lead to multiple causes .. Hence the name tree root diagrams
  19. Please let me explain tree root diagrams, which is the technique that has helped me to banish disappointment, angst and frustration from my retrospectives… Basically it is a simple extension of the five whys. When I started to write out the five whys on the whiteboard, it quickly became apparent that not all problems had a single linear set of causes. Often they were more like the roots of a tree….
  20. Speeds up complex problem solving by Allows us to focus on a small part of the problem at a time Hence reducing cognitive load on the participants Visualises cause and Effect Visualises the whole situation
  21. Paraphrasing and confirming uncovers then resolves misunderstanding. Calms wide emotions by showing that the team recognises them or at the bare minimum acknowledges that feeling.
