Newspapers, Ads, & Socializing of the Century
Over the last twenty years the process in which people acquire information has changed
drastically. There have been the emergences of the internet, new technologies, and newer forms
of communication that have weaned its way into society impacting it socially, politically, and
economically. There is now a lingering question whether or not there is a communication
revolution taking place. Newsstands, advertisements, and social interaction are evolving and
changing realties of society.
Advertisements have recently changed graphic designs with a mixture of elements to
portray the message rather than expressing the point with words. This is easily seen in my anti-
smoking ad examples. The first ad is from the early ninety’s, it list the health hazards of smoking
and chemicals in addition with the punch line: “Do you watch your intake?” Two decades later
anti-smoking ads have evolved into a graphic design with no words but rather a basic mixture of
elements such as cigarettes loaded in a lethal gun. The message it portrays is that smoking kills,
just as guns do. Both ads got across the same point but in very different ways. There is a definite
evolution taking place in the advertisement industry for the better. These ads appeal to those who
want to see them and are swiftly understood by those who have no care for them.
Another major revolution taking place is source of news. Newspapers have been a part of
America’s society since the early 1600’s. Over time this form of media has evolved and become
2. a vital source of information to society. In the late 20th century the Internet was invented. This
was innocent to United States postal services and newspaper makers until social networking was
invented. The social networking epidemic has drastically impacted society both positively and
negatively. The up of social networking has made communicating easier and faster through
email. Due to that fact, United States postal services have decreased immensely costing millions
of dollars and jobs. Additionally it has out-weighed the newspaper industry. The Internet and
even Facebook provide millions with news every day. It provides us with accurate information in
a faster fashion.
Lastly the face of traditional socializing has taken a turn for the worst. A couple decades
ago building personal relationships would require people to go out and associate with other
human beings. Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace have made it possible
for a personal relationship to be built through the internet. These new social Medias have also
made it possible to expand a person’s social life in the blink of an eye. There are hundreds of
“friends” to be gained through the networks. In addition to social networking, there are few
people who are looking for more than friendship: Match.com and Zoosk.comare dating websites
that help accomplish this. The internet has opened the gate to these new social medias which
allow people to become “friends” or even start dating before ever meeting.
In conclusion the communication revolution is progressively changing the face of society.
Its bittersweet change for industries, some will falter while others continue to rise. It has allowed
people to meet without ever meeting each other in person, communicate more accurately and
transform the face of industries. It has only taken two decades for this networking to evolve, in
the 2030 who knows what the future will hold.
