Joshua Reynolds was an outstanding 18th century British portraitist known for his doctrine of imitation proclaimed in his Discourses. Two of his most famous portraits from the 1760s depict Nelly O'Brien, a mistress of the 3rd Viscount of Bolingbroke, with one housed at the Wallace Collection in London and the other at the Hunterian Art Gallery in Scotland.
