OW2con'14 - OpenCloudware: The vApp Lifecycle Management Solution for Multi-C...OW2
The main way to “go cloud” has proved to be, for security and economic reasons, hybrid : mixing private with public. Moving to Cloud PaaS is then requires to: manage the lifecycle of applications over different cloud providers; mask the heterogeneity; automate the deployment whatever the application technology and execution environment are, etc. This is what tackles OpenCloudware, which aims at enabling flexible multi-cloud applications thanks to a full automated think-build-run chain.
In the presentation we present a sample from OpenCloudware results demonstrating in particular a complete mechanism, comprising: application selection, deployment, benchmarking. OpenCloudware supports many IaaS infrasctructures, including OpenStack (via OW2stack). OpenCloudware is supported by the French administration through its IT support program "Fond National pour la Société Numérique".

In a corporate sense, innovation management is about quickly and effectively implementing your organization goals through the adoption of innovative ideas, products, processes and business models. Most organizations are beginning to realize that to drive business growth and maintain a competitive advantage, innovation needs to be discovered and implemented quickly and with care to ensure maximum value.
Enterprise Architecture is an ongoing strategy, planning and management process to help Business and IT executives to align the business strategy with the execution of that strategy with IT.
What does the future hold for BI, CRM, ERP and enterprise software in 2015? IT experts discuss which enterprise software trends will have the greatest impact on IT organizations in the coming year
Buzzwords often give context to concepts that evolved and needed a good “tag” to facilitate dialogue. Microservices is a new “tag” that defines areas I have personally been discovering and using for some time now. Articles and conferences described something that I slowly realized I had been evolving in my own personal experience for the past few years.
Knowledge management in software architectureJon Cohn

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Jon Cohn Exton PA - Technology Trends – 2016 and beyond
1. JonCohn ExtonPA - TechnologyTrends – 2016 andbeyond
Enterprise technologydevelopmentkeepsracingahead,andthisyear'sforecastexplainshow most
of itwill be wrappedinthe cloud
InfoWorld’sDavidLinthicumrecentlysuggesteditwastime to retire the phase “cloudcomputing”
and simplysay“computing.”That’showessential cloudhasbecome -- andwhyforthe past couple
of yearscloudhas framedmyannual attemptto identifythe nine keyenterprise techtrendsgoing
forward.
In 2015, it became a lotclearerwhat cloudinfrastructure inall itsscalable,self-service glorywillbe
bestfor: runningapplicationscomposedof microservicesoutfittedwithRESTful APIs.Mostlikely
those serviceswillrunincontainers,whichgive developersmore control thaneverinbuilding,
testing,anddeployingapplications.Containersinturnsupportdevops,where opsleveragesnew
automation,instrumentation,andmonitoring -- anddevstake new responsibilityforapplicationsin
production.
Sure, that’sone sort of cloudoperation, andfew have all those piecesinplace today.Butit's
remarkable howquicklythissharedvisionof the future hascoalesced.
Still, several elementsof thispicture needtobe completedbeforeyouraverage enterprisecan
contemplate adoption.Whichbringsustoour firsttrendof 2016:
1. 'Cloudnative'shapesthe future
Applicationsbuiltfrommicroservicesrunningincontainershave all sortsof advantagesover
monolithicapplications.Firstandforemost,insteadof dealingwithobscure internal dependencies
that make troubleshootingandupdatingpainful,youcanworkwithdecoupledservicesthatare
individuallymonitoredandmanaged.
But microservicesarchitecture addscomplications -- mainly, swarmsof containerstokeeptrackof.
Andwhomanagesliterallybillionsof containersinproductioneveryday?Google,the companythat
in2007 contributedthe Linux kernel’scgroupscontainerfeatureonwhichDockerwaslaterbuilt.
Last year Google introducedthe opensource Kubernetesproject, whichdistillsGoogle’scontainer
managementsystemintoopensource bitssomere mortalscanwrangle clustersof containersat
scale.Thissummerthe project’sfounder,CraigMcLuckie,announcedthe formationof the CNCF
(CloudNative ComputingFoundation),whichwill take Kubernetesasa startingpointto buildoutan
ecosystemforcontainerscheduling,management,andorchestration.Watchthisspace carefully.
2. Spark 'streaming'accelerates
A funnythinghappenedtobigdatain2015: Spark elbowedHadoopoutof the spotlight.Why?
Because ratherthan processingdatainbigbatchesacross many disks,asHadoopdoes,Sparkworks
itsmagic withsmall batchesinbigmemory -- close enoughtoreal time tobe indistinguishable from
streaming.(Storm,atrue streamingsolution,hasalreadyfallenoutof favor.)
ClouderaandIBMhave gone all-inwithSpark,while Amazon,Google,andMicrosoftofferSparkasa
service intheirpublicclouds.ButSparkstill hasmajorannoyancesrelatingtomemorymanagement
2. and resiliency,amongotherdrawbacks.Withthiskindof momentum,though,youcanexpectmany
such problemstobe addressedinthe comingyear.
3. Developerstapintomachine learning
Notonlydo all the major cloudsnowofferanalyticsasa service, buttheyalsoprovide machine
learningAPIsinthe cloud;plus,opensource machine learningtoolsabound.Ubiquitousmachine
learningcapabilityenablesdeveloperstobuildapplicationsthatrecognize patternsingobsof data --
for frauddetection,face recognition,medical diagnoses,infrastructure optimization,Webad-
serving,youname it.
Of course, some commercial softwareandwebsiteshave hadmachine learningfeaturesforyears
(foranticipatinguseractions,recommendingrelatedproducts,andsoon). The differencetodayis
that machine learningisbrokenoutasa separate capabilityanydevelopercanexploit, andwe now
have tonsof data and cloudcomputingcapacitytothrow at it,includingfancynew serversequipped
withGPU acceleratorsto run machine learningalgorithms.
4. Cisco’sACIreinvigoratesSDN
The veryideaof software-definednetworking(SDN) suggeststhat,eventually,hardware switches
will become commoditized, whichiswhySDN hasbeenseenasan existential threattoCisco.Sofar,
however,SDN adoptionhaslargelybeenconfinedtotelcoandcloudservice providersandhashad
little impactonthe enterprise.
NowCiscohas leapedaheadandintroducedanew SDN scheme dubbedApplicationCentric
Infrastructure (ACI) thatincludesanew operationscontrol protocol,OpFlex, toreplace OpenFlow.
Designedforlarge-scaledeployments,ACIpushesSDN inanew direction,distributingsome of the
control overconfigurationtothe networkandgivingadminsthe abilitytoadjustsettingsata high
level basedonapplicationrequirements.
Most surprisingof all maybe the degree of openness.ACIusesRESTful APIs,andCiscohaspostedan
opensource SDK alongwithvariousACItoolsonGitHub.Also,CiscohasproposedOpFlex asanboth
an IETF standardand as an OpenDaylightproject, andOpFlex alreadyhasthe supportof Microsoft,
IBM, F5, Citrix,RedHat, Canonical,andothers.ConsideringCisco’shuge enterprisemarketshare,
thiscouldbe the jumpstartSDN needs.
5. PaaS getsa secondchance
As AndrewOliver’sclassic2012 article “WhichfreakingPaaSshouldIuse?”made clear,the first
generationof PaaSwasbedeviledbyarbitrarylimitations.Asaresult,enterprisePaaSadoptionhas
beenrelativelyweak.Lotshashappenedrecently,though,includingarushto supportDockerby the
twoleadingon-premisesPaaSofferings,CloudFoundryandOpenShift.
I still believethat,onpremises,manyenterprisescanbenefitfromrunningPaaSasa modern,scale-
out,polyglotversionof the goodoldapplicationserver.AccordingtoMartinHeller’srecent
InfoWorldreview,OpenShiftEnterprise 3hasincorporatedDockercontainerswithoutskippinga
beat:“For both developersandoperators,OpenShiftfulfillsthe promiseof PaaS.”
3. 6. SSDs takesa biggerbite out of the data center
Alreadyflashbeatsspinningdiskinprice-performance forIOPS-intensive applicationssuchasVDIor
high-performance databases,becauseequallyperformantspinningdiskrequiressomanyspindlesto
keepup.All-flasharraysandSSD-packedserversare nolongerrare.Plus,everyone isexcitedabout
3D NAND,whichwill offermuchhigherSSDcapacitiesandperformance
A numberof Internetgiantshave filledtheirdatacenterswithSSDsforpowerconservationaswell
as performance reasons.Nonetheless,performance aside,the notionthatflashwill reachprice-per-
gigabyte paritywithspinningdiskwillremainapipe dreamforyears.Spinningdiskhasmade itsown
advances,includingheliumdrivesandshingledmagneticrecording,soSSDswon’tfullyreplace hard
drivesanytime soon.
7. The hybridcloudgetsreal
I’ve hadtrouble withthe phrase “hybridcloud.”Wasit supposedtomeanintegrationbetweenon-
premisesinfrastructure andthe publiccloud? The integrationof anytwoclouds? If it requireda
private cloudsetuplike a publiccloud, well, sofew of the formerexist, the hybridcloudmightas
well be mythical.
But Microsoftis changingthatwithitsAzure Stack for WindowsServer, whichenablescustomersto
at leastpartially duplicateAzure publiccloudinfrastructurelocally.WhenWindowsServerand
SystemCenter2016 shipnextyear,integratingthemwithAzurepromisestoyieldatrue hybridIaaS
environment.Throughitsprofessionalservices,IBMappearstobe workinginthe same direction
withhybridpublicandprivate cloudOpenStackdeployments.
Amazonlacksa hybridplay(unlessyouconsidersome customers’effortstoduplicate theirlocal
environmentsonAWS“hybrid”).Google doesn’thave ahybridplayeither,butthankstoKubernetes
and the CNCF(see No.1) it'sonlya matter of time.Withthe recenthire of VMware co-founder
Diane Greene toheadup Google Cloud,I’mfinallyconvincedthatGoogle isseriousaboutserving
enterprise cloudcustomers, andahybridKubernetes(andmore) scheme will be partof the deal.
8. Machine learningampsupsecurity
You’ve probablyheardaboutfinancial servicescompaniesusingmachine learningtodetectfraud.
But othersecuritypossibilitiesformachine learningabound,suchasflaggingnetworkanomalies,
trackinguserbehavior,ordetectingzero-daymalware.
Cylance,whichrecentlypartneredwithDell,providesahigh-profileexample:The companyuses
deeplearningalgorithmstodetectaclaimed99 percentof malware.Yetbuyerbeware,because
machine learningalgorithmshave beenusedinsecurityapplicationsforyearswithvaryingsuccess
and manyfalse positives.Advanceswill keepunfoldingthankstobigdata analyticsinthe cloud, but
expectincremental gains,notmiracles.
9. Blockchainbreaksout
Bitcoinhasbeentarnishedmanytimesover.Butblockchain,the mathematical magicbehindbitcoin,
ison the verge of becomingaviable waytoensure the integrityof all kindsof transactions.Ina
recentfeature article,InfoWorld’s PeterWaynercountedmore than100 companiesexploringways
