The Mozilla Taiwan Community (MozTW) opposed a proposed web censorship bill in Taiwan that would allow blocking of websites by ISPs without a court order. In June 2013, MozTW blacked out their website and provided scripts for others to do the same in protest of the bill. The blackout campaign received over 12,000 visitors and media coverage. Though Mozilla Corporation did not take an official stance, MozTW fought independently under Mozilla's principles of an open internet.

What source control software did you use in 2010? Possibly Git, if you were an early adopter or a Linux kernel committer. But chances are you were using Subversion, as this was the product of choice for the majority of the software developers. Ten years later, Git is the most popular product. Which makes me wonder: what will we use another ten years from now?
In this talk we will think about what features we want from our source control software in 2030. More speed? Better collaboration support? No merge conflicts ever?
I’ll also discuss a few products that have been published after Git emerged, including Plastic, Fossil and Pijul. I’ll talk about the extent to which they contain the features we so dearly desire and I’ll demonstrate a few typical use cases. To conclude, I’ll try to predict which one will be ‘the top dog’ in 2030 (all information is provided “as is”, no guarantees etc. etc.).
So attend this session if you’re excited about the future of version control and if you want to have a shot at beating even (!) the early adopters. Now if it turns out I was right, remember that you heard it here first.

This document provides tips and tricks for non-developers ("institutional undevelopers") to do more with technology on their own. It discusses how to:
- Write diagrams using Graphviz to visualize data flows between applications.

Abstract:
Software development stakeholders require a constellation of tools to support their communication, collaboration and coordination activities. But poor tool integration can lead to gaps in knowledge flow, or worse, to an overabundance of shared communication and information. The software development community is witnessing the rise of "social bots" to integrate diverse development and communication tools and to address the challenge of information overload. A bot is a conversational user interface that can automate rote or tedious tasks. It may fetch or share information, extract and analyze data, detect and monitor events and activities in communication and social media, connect developers with each other or with other tools, or it may provide feedback on individual and collaborative development tasks. Some bots are emerging as important team members, providing support for individual and team task management and for the automation of dev-ops and customer support. However, the rapid adoption of bots and the platforms that support them brings possible drawbacks. Designing effective platforms for bots is challenging and bots may introduce alienation among stakeholders or lead to other technical challenges. In this talk, I will discuss the emerging role of bots in software development and describe some of the advantages and challenges that may lie ahead.

While Mozilla Corporation employs around 150 people, thousands of volunteers also contribute as community members, testers, and developers. The Firefox development process involves anyone being able to propose and comment on changes, but only certain people can approve changes. This allows for an open development process balanced with leadership and oversight.

A popular form of software reuse involves linking open source software (OSS) libraries hosted on centralized code repositories, such as Maven or PyPI. The size of such repositories keeps increasing at an astonishing speed, and the network of dependencies among the libraries they host is only a very crude way to reflect the real impact of those dependencies, especially for what concerns bugs and vulnerabilities. It is becoming more and more urgent to develop techniques that aim at analyzing dependencies at a finer level (i.e., at call level). This is precisely the goal of the EU project FASTEN. The purpose is to be able to perform a more sophisticated analysis of security-vulnerability propagation, licensing compliance, and dependency risk profiles (among others) by relying on the call-level dependency network of the whole software ecosystem.More Related Content

Open source software refers to computer programs where the source code is available to the public, allowing users to study, change and improve the software. It is often developed collaboratively. Open source software has advantages like better quality, reliability, flexibility and lower costs compared to proprietary software. The peer review process also helps improve code quality as any issues can be quickly identified and fixed by the community. Popular open source programs that power much of the internet include the Linux operating system, Apache web server, Firefox browser, and content management systems like Drupal and WordPress.

A popular form of software reuse involves linking open source software (OSS) libraries hosted on centralized code repositories, such as Maven or PyPI. The size of such repositories keeps increasing at an astonishing speed, and the network of dependencies among the libraries they host is only a very crude way to reflect the real impact of those dependencies, especially for what concerns bugs and vulnerabilities. It is becoming more and more urgent to develop techniques that aim at analyzing dependencies at a finer level (i.e., at call level). This is precisely the goal of the EU project FASTEN. The purpose is to be able to perform a more sophisticated analysis of security-vulnerability propagation, licensing compliance, and dependency risk profiles (among others) by relying on the call-level dependency network of the whole software ecosystem.Presentation of the FASTEN project, Conference SFScon, Bolzano, Italy

Web Services Tutorial

Object Oriented Programming in PHP
Object Oriented Programming (OOP) allows developers to organize complex programs using classes and objects. OOP uses concepts like encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism to keep data and functionality together in objects. The basic building blocks in OOP are classes, which define the properties and methods of an object, and objects, which are instances of classes. Classes can inherit properties and methods from parent classes, and objects can be identified and compared using operators like instanceof. Magic methods allow objects to override default behavior for operations like property access, method calling and object destruction.
Example Presentation
Inheritance allows similar classes to share a parent class and override features, improving modularity and avoiding duplication. Classes can only have one parent but can have many children classes, and inheritance can include many generations. Inheritance provides a way for classes to inherit and specialize features of other classes.

Design Patterns
This document discusses several common design patterns used in software development including Singleton, Registry, Factory, Adapter, Decorator, and Observer. It provides examples of how each pattern can be implemented in PHP code. The Singleton pattern ensures only one instance of a class can exist. The Registry pattern acts as a singleton for singletons. The Factory pattern handles object creation. The Adapter pattern makes one interface compatible with another. The Decorator pattern allows behavior to be added to individual objects. The Observer pattern notifies observers when a subject changes state.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
