Joel Meyerowitz is an American street photographer born in 1938. He began photography in 1962 and is known for his street photography as well as portraits and landscapes. Meyerowitz photographed the aftermath of 9/11, gaining restricted access to Ground Zero. One of his 9/11 photos from November 2001 shows stairs that would have been used for escape, with other damaged buildings in the background. Meyerowitz's compositions are well thought out, with a main focal point. He photographs urban landscapes in dull colors to depict the somber nature of locations with tragic histories.

Joel Meyerowitz was born in New
York on March 6th
1938. He first started
photography in 1962, he is a street
photographer and does portrait and
landscapes.
He photographed the aftermath of
9/11, he was the only photographer
allowed restricted access to ‘ground
zero’ immediately following the
attack.

been effected by the event. He
used the stairs as his main focal

most important as you have to
know what you want to show and
what is going to be the main
focus.
COMPOSITION

5. Joel Meyerowitz is an urban landscape
photographer. He photographs buildings
and city surroundings rather than the
countryside. He tends to photograph using
dull colours looking images, I think this is
because the places that he chooses to
photograph are ones that have had quite
bad events happen in them. In some of his
photographs there is usually some light, I
think this is to show that he is
photographing places that are being put
back to normal, a slight suggestion that
you can come back from something so
horrific happening.
Joel Meyerowitz uses techniques such as
rule of thirds and depth of field in his
images. He also uses a quick exposure for
his images to get the duller look to them.

I like this piece of work by Joel
Meyerowitz because of the way he
has captured the rubble as well as
all the buildings not affected by the
attack. I think it is interesting and
brave of him to photograph the
aftermath of these attacks, as they
affected so many people in so
many different ways and I think it
would have been hard to seem the
outcome of all that.
