This document discusses different types of photography including war photography, fashion photography, and documentary photography. It provides details about war photographer Zoriah Miller who risks his life to document conflicts around the world without guaranteed pay. In contrast, famous fashion photographer Annie Leibovitz earns millions taking photos to advertise products. While both serve important roles, the document argues war photography is more significant as it informs people about critical global issues.

2. There are many different types of photography
• War Photography
• Fashion Photography
• Music Photography
• Wedding Photography
• Product Photography
• Architectural Photography
• Travel Photography
• Fine Art Photography
• Documentary Photography
To name a few…
3. What is Fashion Photography?
Fashion Photography is the
combination of two art forms, Fashion
and Photography.
The purpose of Fashion Photography is
to create a photo that is aesthetically
pleasing while promoting something
such as a colour, product or style.
Fashion Photography is more
artistically focused on a subject. For
example the clothes or hair, how you
make them come to life could easily
demonstrate how good the
photograph is.
4. Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz is a Fashion Photographer.
She the highest paid photographer in the US, capable of earning 5
million pounds a year. Her rates have been as high as $250,000 a
day.
5. Early Life
• She was born in Waterbury,
Connecticut, on October 2, 1949,Anna-
Lou Leibovitz is the third of six children
of Marilyn Edith and Samuel Leibovitz.
She is a third-generation American; her
father's parents were Romanian Jews.
• Her mother was a modern dance
instructor of Estonian Jewish heritage.
Her father was a lieutenant colonel in
the U.S. Air Force. The family moved
frequently with her father's duty
assignments. It was there where she
took her first pictures when he was
stationed in the Philippines during the
Vietnam War.
6. Career
• In 1970 Annie Leibovitz started her
professional career as a staff photographer
working for the start-up rock music magazine
‘Rolling Stones’. She was being paid $47 a
week, this is equivalent to £189 in today’s
money.
• Within 2 years, 23-year-old Annie was
promoted to chief photographer. A title she
held for the next 10 years.
• In 1975 her position with the magazine
afforded her the opportunity to accompany
the Rolling Stones band on the 1975
international tour
7. Rolling Stone’s
• While with Rolling Stone, Leibovitz
developed her trademark technique,
which involved the use of bold
primary colors and surprising poses.
• The co-founder and publisher of the
Rolling Stone’s magazine Jann Wenner
has credited her with making many
Rolling Stone covers collector's items,
most notably an issue that featured a
nude John Lennon curled around his
fully clothed wife, Yoko Ono. Taken on
December 8, 1980, Leibovitz’s photo
of the former Beatle was shot just
hours before his death.
8. Where her photos were used
Annie Leibovitz’s photos were used on
front covers of the Rolling Stones
magazine, many high profile
advertisements and in the Nation Portait
gallery in Washington D.C.
Annie Leibovitz is seen as a portrait
photographer who can capture an
emotion with in a single frame. She said
herself “The purpose of my pictures are
not to just promote the magazine. My
job is to take a photo that sells the
magazine”.
Annie Leibovitz’s photos made people
buy magazines and products all over the
world.
9. Every photographer has
their own style of
photography, this makes
their work recognizable to
the trained and
sometimes the untrained
eye.
This is no different for
Annie, her pictures are
recognizable for their
bright colors, intense
lighting, and above all, for
unique and surprising
poses.
Annie’s Style
10. In this picture, the most noticeable thing
is the background. This is because its so
bright it draws your attention.
We can tell that the theme of the photo is
Summer. We can see the Subject, Keira
Knightley is lying down on different
coloured flowers while wearing a bright
summer dress. This is why it also makes
the Subject seem as if she is blending into
the background.
Its hard to tell if this photo has been
taken with natural light or not. Because
there is no reflection of a flash or artificial
lighting in Keira’s eyes which is the usual
dead giveaway. Also the lighting has a
warm temperature to it, this suggests
even more so that the sun was the source
of light. But at the same time the more I
look at the grass and flowers the more I
think it looks fake. It’s is a possibility that
it is a fake patch of grass that could have
easily been taken to a studio where again
it is another possibility to make artificial
lighting look like light from the sun. Either
way it’s a brilliant photo, but the lighting
has baffled me.
11. Its hard to notice Keira’s
unusual
Pose, which is one of Annie
Lebovitz’s many signatures on
her photos.
The Framing is amazing, the
way Keira’s head is centered in
frame, but her body exits the
frame through the bottom left
hand corner.
Last but not least Annie
manages to break the rule of
thirds in this photo and get
away with it.
12. Rule of thirds
The theory is that if you place
points of interest in the
intersections or along the
lines that your photo
becomes more balanced and
will enable a viewer of the
image to interact with it more
naturally.
Studies have shown that
when viewing images that
people’s eyes usually go to
one of the intersection points
most naturally rather than
the center of the shot – using
the rule of thirds works with
this natural way of viewing an
image rather than working
against it.
13. The composition of the photo is beautiful, the similarities of colour
of the sky and the dress help the Background to complement the
Subject in the Foreground.
Artificial lighting has been used as we can see the Sun in the
background and then we can see there is another light source
lighting the subject’s hair, face and arm.
The texture of the background is softer than the foreground because
the depth of field is shallow. This makes the background out of focus
and soft, and the Subject in focus and sharp
Again we see the Annie’s signature, her subject is holding an unusual
pose.
14. Different Applications Of Photography
War photography
War photography involves photographing armed conflict and its effects on
people and places. The purpose is to document, inform and educate.
15. • With the invention of
photography in the 1830s,
the possibility of capturing
the events of war to enhance
public awareness was first
explored. Although ideally
photographers would have
liked to accurately record the
rapid action of combat, the
technical insufficiency of
early photographic
equipment in recording
movement made this
impossible.
Evolution of Photography
16. In this day and age…
This is the Equipment a War Journalist Photographer carries
with him while he is working. His name is Zoriah Miller.
17. Zoriah was born January 27,
1976 is an American
photojournalist and war
photographer.
Although working as a
photographer from a young
age Miller's career did not
take off until late 2005 when
a photograph of his showing
one result of the 2004 Indian
Ocean tsunami was
published by Newsweek.
Zoriah Miller
18. Zoriah is a freelance
photographer, he plans his
trips and then has meetings
with Magazines to ask them
what type of photos they are
looking for while.
He goes to these dangerous
war torn areas to take
photo’s with no guarantee
that he will be getting paid
for his photos.
How He Gets Work
19. Zoriah Miller’s photography is very distinctive. Even though he does appreciate
colour, we can tell he is attracted to Black and White Photography because very
few of his photos are in Colour.
The themes of Zoriah’s photo’s are poverty, sadness, and death, but the texture of his
photos are never rough. Everything he shoots looks soft and glossy. It’s an interesting
style. Also he likes to use natural lighting, but will use artificial lights when he has to.
Zoriah’s photos are very expressive, I believe he wants to create an emotional response
with the viewers, Zoriah says that he wants to use his equipment to make a change to the
world.
20. To a lot of people this photo might look like two people are playing with sand. In actual fact it’s
the African people making a large amount of food to most likely feed their village.
This photography is very interesting, it could have been taken with artificial lighting because we
can see the reflection of lights on the rim of the metal bowl. But at the same time from the
motion blur on the food we can tell that Zoriah was using a slow shutter speed. The only reason
for him to be using a slow shutter speed would be let in more light in because it’s dark, which
then means he wasn’t using a flash.
If he really was
using a flash
then the only
explanation I
have for him to
be using a slow
shutter speed
would be for
him to achieve
that desired
motion blur
effect to give his
photograph
have a soft
texture.
Photo Analysis
21. This photo is an example of Documentary Photography.
The only light source in this photo is the Sun which is coming from behind the subject in the
back ground, this in addition with the black and white effect creates a Silhouette on the man.
Because this photo is in black and white it creates contrast and distortion for the viewers, it
stops us from seeing exactly what he is doing but it still leaves us with the impression that he
is going through some sort of hardship.
The framing is purposely at an angle, maybe to add some creativity to the photo. Turning the
camera 45degrees is something not seen often, its something that is definitely frowned apon
in the photography world.
Also I feel like could be a religious link to this photo, the Subject has a similar pose as the
man we know as Jesus Christ.
This photo still has Zoriah Miller’s signature soft look but at the sametime the fierce sky
stops the photo looking as soft as some of Millers other work.
22. War vs Fashion
Even though War Journalist photographers are not as popular as
Fashion Photographers, we can see this is the case from their salaries.
(Annie Leibovitz made up to $250,000 a day for some of her projects.
Zoriah Miller wasn’t even guaranteed pay for his photos.)
Both forms of photography are important.
The two applications of photography are completely different. War
Photography is about documenting, informing and educating, where as
Fashion Photography is about advertising and selling. Both forms of
photography are important, but I believe War photography is a much
more important application purely for the fact that its news and its
how we find out what happens in other parts of the world. War
Photography creates awareness which can save lives. The most Fashion
Photography can do is make a lot of money.
