5. From Esther Nasser | CEO | Joburg Ballet
Joburg Ballet has taken a bold new step by creating a space for opportunities for
Joburg choreographers and companies to come together and create together. We
welcome the two leading contemporary companies, Vuyani Dance Theatre and
Moving Into Dance Mophatong, and our director, Fiona Ramsay, and look forward
to the journey together. This collaboration promises to merge different philosophies
and techniques to tell a simple but familiar story of love against all odds in the Big
City, where we all dare to dream big! Joburg Ballet invites you to enjoy the roller
coaster ride that has become Big City, Big Dreams.
From Iain MacDonald | Artistic Director | Joburg Ballet
As a world class African ballet company, Joburg Ballet aims to present new and
proudly South African works. Big City, Big Dreams is a collaborative production
utilising the skills and talents of South African artists. I would like to thank all three
companies, Vuyani Dance Theatre, Moving Into Dance Mophatong and Joburg Ballet
as well as the creative team for their open minds and willingness to be taken out of
their comfort zones. As an audience we hope you enjoy the journey with us as we
open ourselves to new experiences.
From Nadia Virasamy | CEO | Moving Into Dance Mophatong
Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) is proud to be a part of this pioneering
collaboration between three very differently styled dance companies. With our 39
year history of impacting change through Contemporary-African dance, it is refresh-
ing to see yet another chapter being added to MIDM’s book of experience as we
collaborate with Joburg Ballet. It is equally significant to be sharing the stage with
VDT whose founder and Artistic Director was a graduate of, and danced with MIDM.
Sincere appreciation to the Joburg Ballet CEO for driving this collaboration and we
trust that it will open future possibilities to enhance the practice and performance
of dance in South Africa and beyond.
From Lindiwe Letwaba | CEO | Vuyani Dance Theatre
Vuyani Dance Theatre’s latest flight of choreographic fancy and stage direction is
inspired by many artistic influences, but it is rooted in the concrete reality of our
collective vision: Using dance in a provocative and ambitious way as a vehicle to
create sustainable jobs in the arts. It is because of this vision that Vuyani Dance
Theatre continues to evolve in a courageous and innovative way directly contribut-
ing to the South African creative economy. Part of the VDT’s positive growth is due
the willingness to collaborate with other organisations thus creating opportunities
for shared growth and knowledge exchange on best practice models around the
business of the arts. We are very proud to be part Big City, Big Dreams, a melting pot
of collaborative creativity with Joburg Ballet and Moving Into Dance Mophatong.
7. Story
The story celebrates the City of Joburg in an
urban tale of two young people finding their way
in the world – one a ballerina Zara, who lives in
the world of tutus and tulle under the watchful
eye of the Ballet Master Franco, her dance part-
ner Rudi and her arch rival Caron, and is torn
between dedicating her life to the dance inside
the studio or experiencing life outside. The other
is a bright young businessman Muzi carving
out a niche for himself in the commercial jungle,
filled with competitive colleagues and a jealous
CEO. He is torn between joining the rat-race to
climb the corporate ladder, and the world of
clubs, bars and soccer enjoyed with his mate
Sticks and the new sensation of falling in love. We
follow their story which unfolds in the streets and
precincts of Jozi with its vibrant rhythms, pulse
and people.
Director’s Note from Fiona Ramsay
The City of Joburg is at the heart of the piece as it
is home to all three dance companies. As a born
and bred ‘Joburger’, I have witnessed the skyline
shift with each decade and it remains an image
which conjures up excitement, possibility and
urban romance. It is a city that has enjoyed vast
wealth, celebrated artistic endeavor and hosted
prestigious social and sporting events. It is city of
contrasts - great initiative, camaradie and warmth
countered by greed, survival and a desire to win!
It has been challenging, exciting and rewarding
working with the companies who have their own
personal and social identities, unique styles,
different energies, sensibilities and histories,
emerging in a fusion where all involved have
enjoyed vibrant cultural collaboration. Albert
Einstein said, ‘All dancers are the athletes of the
heart’ – my aim is that you witness this heart!
