• Royal Dutch Shell recently announced plans to build a $4.0 billion cracker plant in Beaver County,
Pennsylvania. The plant will take ethane derived from the region's shale gas and convert it to
polyethylene, making up to 1.5 million metric tons of the plastics feedstock per year. Construction is
anticipated to begin within 18 months and take several years to complete.
• The facility will have a significant economic impact on northeast Ohio and, in particular, the 400-plus
polymer companies located in the region. The cracker will provide easier access to polyethylene for Ohio
manufacturing companies, minimizing their costs and reducing start-to-finish production time.
