Jesus
The Second Man
• 1 Cor. 15:45 "The first man Adam became a living
being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 첫 사람 아담
은 생령이 되었다 함과 같이 마지막 아담은 살려 주는 영
이 되었나니”
• 1 Cor. 15:47 "The first man was of the dust of the
earth, the second man from heaven.
• the last Adam / the second man : not interchangeable
• Jesus had to be “the last Adam” before He could
be “the second Man.”
• The fallen race with its old, evil inheritance had to
be dealt with first before a brand-new race or new
creation can begin.
• By His death on the cross, Jesus, as “the last Adam,”
sealed off the whole evil inheritance from Adam.
• Then in His resurrection, He came forth as “the
second Man”—the head of a completely new race.
The picture of Jesus listed
in logical order (Colossians 1:15-18)
1. He is the image of the invisible God (v. 15).
2. The firstborn over all creation (v. 15).
3. He is before all things (v. 17).
4. By Him all things were created, both in the heavens
and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been
created through Him and for Him (v. 16).
5. in him all things hold together (v. 17).
6. He is the beginning and the firstborn from among
the dead (v. 18).
7. He is the head of the body, the church (v. 18).
1. He is the image of the invisible God (v. 15).
• Jesus completely, accurately and perfectly shows
forth the likeness of God, who cannot be seen by
natural, human eyes.
2. The firstborn over all creation (v. 15).
• “Firstborn” does not mean being born of a woman.
• “First-begotten” is better translation because male begets.
• In scripture the word "only begotten“(독생자) is a term used for
"unique" or "pre-eminence".
Isaac was called Abraham’s ONLY begotten son (Gen 22:2,16
your only son 네 독자 이삭), but Isaac was neither the first nor
the last, nor the only, of Abraham’s sons, the term shows His
pre-eminent status.
So when we say the ONLY BEGOTTEN of the Father --
We know Christ is UNIQUE, the only way of salvation, the only
name by which the human race can be saved. The only
"door" God has opened by which we can enter heaven.
• Also, “firstborn” means “the first”, “the leader,” or
“the chief.”
• In Colossians 1:18 "And He [Christ] is the head of the
body, the church: who is the beginning, the
FIRSTBORN FROM THE DEAD: that in all things he
might have the pre-eminence." 그는 몸인 교회의 머

3. He is before all things (v. 17).
• Jesus eternally existed before all things.
• Proverbs 8:22-25
• John 8:58
4. By Him all things were created (v. 16)
• John 1:1-3
• “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God.
• He was with God in the beginning.
• Through him all things were made; without him
nothing was made that has been made.”

5. In him all things hold together (v. 17).
• Hebrew 1:3 “Who being the brightness of his glory,
and the express image of his person, and upholding
all things by the word of his power, when he had by
himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand
of the Majesty on high:”

6. He is the beginning and the firstborn from the dead (v. 18).
• By His resurrection, Jesus became the first-begotten
from the dead.
• By His resurrection, Jesus brought forth a new
creation—a new type of human race.
7. He is the head of the body, the church (v. 18).
• The body always follows the head. The Church, the
body of Christ, has followed Him through death and
resurrection…and in fact, is the result of his death
and resurrection.
Jesus is begotten of the dead
• The historical records about the death and
resurrection of Jesus can easily be found in the New
Testament.
• But the real meaning of his death and resurrection
can only be found in the Old Testament.
• Messianic psalms
Psalm 2: a total picture of Jesus in His
eternal nature before His death and resurrection
• v1-3: the rejection of Jesus as the Messiah by the
human race
• v4-5: God the Father reverses man’s decision by His
own decree.
• v6: “set” in Hebrew means “anointed”…there is an
anointing in heaven.
• v7: Now is the Son speaking: how would God
overturn the foolish verdicts of man? Bu raising His

• v7: “Today I have begotten You”…What day is that?
• There is no day in the realm of eternity. So, the
begetting here ⇒ the begetting from the dead—the
resurrection.
• Col. 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the
church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from
among the dead, so that in everything he might
have the supremacy.

• v10-12 Invitation to Jesus
Ps. 89:19-25
• V26 The Son acknowledges the Father as His
“Father”, “God” and rock of His “salvation.” But how
did Jesus experience salvation? Here the salvation
of Jesus was in His resurrection!
• Heb. 5:7 During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he
offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and
tears to the one who could save him from death,
• V27: By that resurrection, God makes Jesus His
firstborn and ruler over the kings of the earth.
• So, Jesus became the firstborn from the dead…the
begotten of the dead.
• ⇒ Out of His death, something new came forth!
• The question: Was Jesus a Man temporarily or is He still
a Man today?
• 1 Tim. 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator

The New God-Man Race!
• God brought forth a new God-man race into the
world…and Jesus Christ is the head, the chief—the
firstborn—of this new race!
• By identifying with Jesus in His death, burial and
resurrection, we enter into this new creation and
new race.
• 2 Cor 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a

• Eph. 2:5-6 Our identification is not just with His death,
burial and resurrection…but also the ascension in
the spirit!
- We are made alive with Him.
- We are resurrected with Him.
- We are now seated with Him in the heavenly places.
- Do not treat yourself as if you are worthless before
God anymore.
- You are not just a natural being…Christ is alive in
you.
