Food for Health Ireland (FHI) is a public-private partnership between Irish food companies and research organizations, funded by Enterprise Ireland and industry partners. FHI conducts industry-led research on the functionality of milk components and their role in infant nutrition, glycemic management, appetite modulation, healthy aging, and more. FHI aims to generate disruptive innovation for the Irish dairy industry by combining academic research, product development, and marketing in an integrated value chain to overcome the problem of research not being translated into commercial products. Recent FHI human trials found that a protein supplement combined with physical activity significantly increased lean tissue mass in elderly people and improved walking speed.

Dr. Chris Boone, then-VP in Avalere’s Evidence Translation and Implementation Practice, discussed clinical trial data transparency and considerations for governance and open data sharing. Clinical trials are extremely valuable as the primary data source for seeking regulatory approval of products. Historically, regulatory agencie have been the sole recipients of clinical trial data, butthere has been a recent push from various stakeholder groups to open access to clinical trial data to non-regulatory researchers as an act of ethical responsibility to patients, a contribution to public health, and a demonstrated commitment to advancing the science. Some of the barriers include developing a sound approach for de-identifying patient data, adopting universal clinical trial data format, and managing the proactive and non-selective access and security of clinical data once collected. Dr. Boone discusses rationales and benefits/risks of clinical trial transparency, responsible use of publicly sharing this data, barriers and legal implications, and reasonable data sharing models.

Optimizing Breastfeeding for Better Health Outcomes The Way Forward
Breastfeeding is the clinical gold standard for infant feeding and nutrition, with breast milk uniquely tailored to meet the health needs of a growing baby. However, breastfeeding seems to be under attack by the commercial influence of the baby food industry, supported at work places and in the hospitals where they come to deliver. Artificial baby milk formula cannot meet the gold standards of breast milk. Provisions of IMS Act exists but widespread awareness and effective enforcement is required. Various studies reveal the gaps in the provision and implementation of the laws and awareness programs and to suggest appropriate solutions. It, thus, becomes necessary to emphasize upon the provisions of IMS Act, 2003 and evidently bring forward the commercial influence of baby food industry. Review revealed that the provisions of IMS Act has been violated at various online and offline platforms. Strategies to optimise breastfeeding and overcome breastfeeding barriers in the country are recommended, including community health and education programmes and -˜baby friendly’ hospital initiatives. Advocates of breastfeeding are needed at the national, community and family levels. In addition, more systematic research should be conducted to examine breastfeeding practices and the best strategies to promote breastfeeding in this country. Tackling Obesities - Foresight Government Internship, Summer 2006
In collaboration with Michael Burton, I worked at FORESIGHT, a Government think tank based in the Government Office for Science, to envision the impact of the predicted obesity epidemic over the next 50 years.
Our work considered the evolution of the body in response to an overtly obesogenic environment and some proposals for tackling the problem. The project aims to be a point of provocation informed by Foresight's extensive consultation with leading world scientists, experts and other leading stakeholders in order to stimulate debate in Government as well as the general public.
We generated a range of visual scenarios extrapolating the various drivers deemed to be contributing to the development of the Obesity epidemic. Each scenario was based on a paper written by various experts in education, nutrition, the built environment and each one discussed their theories on the causes and potential impacts of obesity in the next 50 years.

Dr. Francesc Puiggròs discusses (1) the analysis of communication related to health claims on foods and benefits, (2) how science communication is a matter for all stakeholders, and (3) ways to gain consumer reliability through science. He analyzes global recommendations for healthier diets and initiatives in the EU to promote better habits. However, there is controversy around communicating food properties due to uncertainty about health effects and potential overconsumption. Regulation aims to increase trust but challenges remain in consumer understanding of claims.

ABSTRACT: The study examined the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among working mothers in the formal sector. The objectives of the study were, to evaluate the extent of exclusive breastfeeding awareness; to ascertain how working mothers cope with exclusive breastfeeding. The study applied social action theory, quantitative and qualitative method of data collection was used. Two hundred questionnaires were administered to mothers’ attending university of Abuja teaching hospital (UATH), St Mary’s Private Hospital and Area Council Town Clinic. From the returned questionnaires, one hundred and eighty seven (187) of them were correctly answered. Also two rounds of In-depth interview was conducted, participants were paediatric doctors and nurses. Analysis was done using frequency counts and simple percentages, while chi-square (X2 ) was used in testing hypotheses. Findings showed that majority of the working mothers practice exclusive breastfeeding, but the practice is stressful. It was also observed that mothers with higher qualifications tend to practice exclusive breastfeeding because of its gains. Also work place lack facilities to cater for the needs of working mothers. The research is significant to government on policy issues and other related agencies for a productive workforce and a greater reduction in infant mortality. The study suggested among others that the policy for maternity leave should be reviewed upward. Again, work places should establish crèches for a productive workforce.

Optimizing Breastfeeding for Better Health Outcomes The Way Forward
Breastfeeding is the clinical gold standard for infant feeding and nutrition, with breast milk uniquely tailored to meet the health needs of a growing baby. However, breastfeeding seems to be under attack by the commercial influence of the baby food industry, supported at work places and in the hospitals where they come to deliver. Artificial baby milk formula cannot meet the gold standards of breast milk. Provisions of IMS Act exists but widespread awareness and effective enforcement is required. Various studies reveal the gaps in the provision and implementation of the laws and awareness programs and to suggest appropriate solutions. It, thus, becomes necessary to emphasize upon the provisions of IMS Act, 2003 and evidently bring forward the commercial influence of baby food industry. Review revealed that the provisions of IMS Act has been violated at various online and offline platforms. Strategies to optimise breastfeeding and overcome breastfeeding barriers in the country are recommended, including community health and education programmes and -˜baby friendly’ hospital initiatives. Advocates of breastfeeding are needed at the national, community and family levels. In addition, more systematic research should be conducted to examine breastfeeding practices and the best strategies to promote breastfeeding in this country. In collaboration with Michael Burton, I worked at FORESIGHT, a Government think tank based in the Government Office for Science, to envision the impact of the predicted obesity epidemic over the next 50 years.
Our work considered the evolution of the body in response to an overtly obesogenic environment and some proposals for tackling the problem. The project aims to be a point of provocation informed by Foresight's extensive consultation with leading world scientists, experts and other leading stakeholders in order to stimulate debate in Government as well as the general public.
We generated a range of visual scenarios extrapolating the various drivers deemed to be contributing to the development of the Obesity epidemic. Each scenario was based on a paper written by various experts in education, nutrition, the built environment and each one discussed their theories on the causes and potential impacts of obesity in the next 50 years.

However, there is controversy around communicating food properties due to uncertainty about health effects and potential overconsumption. Regulation aims to increase trust but challenges remain in consumer understanding of claims.

ABSTRACT: The study examined the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among working mothers in the formal sector. The objectives of the study were, to evaluate the extent of exclusive breastfeeding awareness; to ascertain how working mothers cope with exclusive breastfeeding. The study applied social action theory, quantitative and qualitative method of data collection was used. Two hundred questionnaires were administered to mothers’ attending university of Abuja teaching hospital (UATH), St Mary’s Private Hospital and Area Council Town Clinic. From the returned questionnaires, one hundred and eighty seven (187) of them were correctly answered. Also two rounds of In-depth interview was conducted, participants were paediatric doctors and nurses. Analysis was done using frequency counts and simple percentages, while chi-square (X2 ) was used in testing hypotheses. Findings showed that majority of the working mothers practice exclusive breastfeeding, but the practice is stressful. It was also observed that mothers with higher qualifications tend to practice exclusive breastfeeding because of its gains. Also work place lack facilities to cater for the needs of working mothers. The research is significant to government on policy issues and other related agencies for a productive workforce and a greater reduction in infant mortality. The study suggested among others that the policy for maternity leave should be reviewed upward. Again, work places should establish crèches for a productive workforce.

- The main point to get across here is the fact that NOT redressing the skewed protein quality & distribution actually leads to a continued decline in lean tissue as you would naturally expect from ageing (refer to results of maltodextrin control after 24 weeks). However, redressing the skewed protein quality & distribution (consuming our protein supplement twice daily at minor meals) significantly increases lean tissue, off setting the natural loss of lean tissue as we age. Physical activity augments the effect of the protein supplement, but is not significantly better. Combination of protein supplement and physical activity is optimal solution. Please note: there was no significant effect after 12 weeks with the protein supplement
- Quality of Life assessment: time taken to complete a 1Km walk. Protein supplement and progressive programme of resistance-based physical activity significantly reduce time taken to comlplete a 1Km walk (by 34 secs)
