Evolution and Morality By Jen Blackthorn
Where Does Morality Come From? Dennett discussed the complexity of the origin of morality. Memes and language, religion, authority figures, family members, and friends. Morality and ethics have an influence on our thoughts about evolution.
Religion Religion is a major source of our perception of morality. Different cultures have different beliefs. “ Without religion, we would have no moral values.” “ Humans are the only ones with a conscience; therefore, we are the only ones who have a sense of morality.”
“Religion is connected to violence” Dennett-Religion should not be viewed as a source of ethical wisdom that is superior to science. Though religion has an enormous influence on the decisions people make, religion is not the only reason why we have a sense of morality.
Altruism Altruism can be defined as the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others. Our concepts of morality are similar to the morality of other animals.

Why Darwin’s Idea is Dangerous People fear that the theory of evolution will interfere with their sense of morality, as well as their sense of purposefulness in their lives. Most people would rather believe in religion than learn more about the theory of evolution.
“The best we can achieve is the courage to face the fact that the human race is a cosmic accident, and we must therefore create as much meaning during our short individual and species’ lifespan as possible.” Dawkins
