VISTA
Joint venture between the Parks Department and the Billings
Metro VISTA Project with the purpose of:
 Building community by fostering a welcoming and supportive
environment for plot owners, workshop participants, and the
community at large
 Providing educational opportunities through mentoring, classes,
camps, workshops and printed resources
 Reaching low-income citizens through education,
empowerment, and access
 Engaging in the local food movement through the locally-
sourced production of healthy, fresh produce

 Irrigation system put in
 Fence constructed
 Compost brought in
 Sites tilled
 Gardens planted
 2015 Stats
 2956lbs of produce
 37 plots filled with plot owners
 155 volunteers
 Highly invested volunteers and
community members providing
advice and guidance to the
Parks Department as well as the
gardeners
 Meet monthly to discuss
improvements to the garden,
new ideas, changes in policy
 Secure donations (building /
startup materials, tools, seeds,
starts, etc)
 Assist in advertising and
outreach
 Determines own size and
membership
 Volunteer corps assisting with
maintenance, projects, and
events
 Provide support to gardeners
(give garden knowledge, act
as a liaison between
gardeners and the Parks
staff)
 Give garden tours
 Social / Community:
o Mutual respect and support
o Cooperation with Parks staff
o No working in other plots without
consent
 Plots:
o One per person
o No tall plants or invasive species
o Keep clean and weed-free
 Maintenance:
o Conserve water
o Maintain organic practices
o Weigh produce after harvesting
 Communal Areas:
o Managed by Parks and Rec,
maintained by volunteers/gardeners
o Produce is donated (not sold)
 Compost:
o Managed by compost team
o Workshop attendance required to join
o All gardeners can add (shredded)
scraps
 Shed / Tools:
o Provided for everyone
o Keep clean
o Keep tools in shed, keep shed locked
 Miscellaneous:
o Parental supervision under 12 years
o 6am – 9pm hours
o Keep garden locked when empty
o Stay observant and look after fellow
gardeners
