- Anxiety is the #1 mental health issue in the United States, followed by depression, and it disproportionately affects young people. According to the 2022 Deloitte Gen Z and Millennial survey, about 50% of Gen Z’s and 40% of millennials experience anxiety all or most of the time. We conducted our own survey and found that about 60 out of 100 respondents experience anxiety to that level of frequency.
- So our team then thought, “How might we make overcoming anxiety easier for young adults so that it minimizes the disruption it causes?”
- After interviewing seven young adults, we discovered that first, they experience heightened levels of anxiety due to negative thoughts that come their mind. Second, in those moments, they want to talk to someone but cannot because no one is available, they didn’t want to burden their loved ones, or therapy can becomes too expensive. Finally, they struggle to build a habit of practicing mindfulness so that they can control their anxiety levels. Our team decided to focus on the first two problem for our solution.
- So we decided to decided to build Cope: a mobile app that helps users reduce their anxiety levels by acting as their own therapist.
- Let me highlight our key features. Our app guides users through a coping session that consists of series of questions that would expose their thinking, curated affirmation statements to neutralize their negative thoughts, and finally mediation. Each step is guided by a human voice and users respond to each question via voice recording. Just like a real conversation.
- Meet our persona Angela from NYC who interns for a tech company her constant worrying about her expenses gives her anxiety she needs to develop a habit of check ins and mindfulness to become aware of her negative thoughts. Her goals is to cope with her anxiety without having to pay out of pocket expenses. Now I will pass it off to Victoria our front end developer to showcase the product demo
- Most if not all of all testors provided us some great feedback and it help us to gain a better understanding that we are in fact building an app that is much needed especially during this time. Next we will talk about our learnings starting with Brunnell Cope’s product manager
- First, I learned how important it was bring clarity to my team around the problem we are solving and the solution. Second, I learned how to effectively collaborate with my product designer to design a great product, and finally I became comfortable with building iteratively.
- Towards the end of coping session, we provide affirmation statements relevant to the user so they can neutralize the negative with positive thoughts.
- And the coping session ends with meditation so that users can finish even more relaxed and grounded and in positive state of mind.
