The boys grew up within
sight of the sea that took
them away, rambling along
paths and climbing rocks
that would later be the
launching pad for their
flimsy rafts.

Often the tides of the
Mediterranean bring ashore
instead the bodies and belongings
of others who attempted a similar
migration _ those from distant
countries who hoped that the
beaches of North Africa would be
their last stop before Europe. These
migrants have already traveled
thousands of miles just to reach the
Mediterranean coast, where their
journey stops abruptly.

The belongings are painstakingly gathered by an
artist who tries to create beauty out of sorrow _ a
torn pink bra, a child’s worn jacket, a pack of
cigarettes. And the bodies are retrieved by a retired
fisherman, who has made it his life’s work to
provide a proper burial to the foreigners even
though they die without a name.November 5, 2018 Pictures of the day - Oct.11 - Oct.15, 2018 - vinhbinh2010 8
The Mediterranean has been robbing
Tunisia of its young, who abandon
their homeland in hopes of a better
life in Europe. At the closest points,
Ras Jebel in the north and the
Kerkennah Islands in the east, it’s a
half-day sail if all goes well.
But the sea often swallows the rafts
whole, and their passengers
disappear without a trace.

Migrants who go missing are a daily reproach to
political failure, so there is rarely an official count
of the departed, the dead or the disappeared.
However, an Associated Press tally has
documented at least 56,800 migrants dead or
missing worldwide since 2014 _ almost double the
number found in the world’s only official attempt
to count them, by the U.N.’s International
Organization for Migration.
This includes the 11 young Tunisians who
disappeared off the coast on May 7, 2011, and
were never counted by their government. They
left behind parents and siblings, who on a clear
day can see the island where the boat crashed
against the rocks and sank. Their photos, school
notebooks and clothing for the most part remain
untouched in their rooms. In case they return.
This Sunday, April 15, 2018 photo shows the "Cemetery of
the Unknown," where migrants who were found dead on
nearby shores are buried, in the port town of Zarzis, Tunisia.

“Europe is protecting its borders
but has no interest in the human
beings,” said Chamsedding
Marzouk, the former sailor who
maintains the cemetery of the
unknown as a volunteer. “Who
will visit the graves of our
relatives when they die? Who
will visit these graves? Who will
weep for them?”

Fournoi, Greece, September 15, 2018.
Archaeologists in Greece have
discovered at least 58 shipwrecks,
many laden with antiquities, in what
they say may be the largest
concentration of ancient wrecks ever
found in the Aegean and possibly the
whole of the Mediterranean. Vassilis

As many as 5,000 people may still be
buried under the mud, disaster relief
officials estimate. Indonesia called off
the search for victims on Friday, two
weeks after the quake, citing health
concerns, despite residents' pleas to

The town in the province of central

by the phenomenon of ground
liquefaction, when the shaking earth
turns soft, damp soil into a roiling
quagmire, dragging thousands of
houses and people under mud and

Returning to Balaroa for the first time
two weeks after the disaster, Hesti
Andayani, 27, was shocked to find her
childhood home had slid downhill, far
rom its original location.
"It took so long to find," she said,
through tears. "I don’t know where we
can live now."
Hesti, who lost her younger sister in
the quake, sat on a pile of tiles that
once covered part of her second-floor
bedroom, surrounded by dusty
jewellery and cosmetics.
"These are all the things I have left.
My makeup, my necklaces, the pins for
my hijab," she sobbed, referring to the
headgear worn by devout Muslim
women.

After an earthquake of magnitude 7.5
hit Indonesia's coastal city of Palu, a
pile of broken pink concrete is all that
remains of fruit vendor Kaharuddin's
home.
He stares quietly at the rubble in his
hometown of Balaroa, saying it covers
the body of his one-year-old daughter,
one of hundreds of people missing
after the Sept. 28 disaster.
"I'm just waiting here and hope that I
can find my child," said Kaharuddin,
40, who goes by one name, like many
Indonesians. "Or maybe I have to
accept that one will have to remain
buried here."
Four days after the quake, he said,
rescue workers found the remains of
his wife, Hastuti, still holding in her
arms the bodies of their other two
daughters, aged four and two.

Others must reconcile themselves to the
loss of loved ones.
In Petobo, about 12 km (7.5 miles) away,
Ameriyah, 56, lost three of her children, a
grandchild and a son-in-law. She has
accepted it is unlikely that searchers will
now uncover their remains.
"We've held funeral prayers for them, so
we hope their souls will be at peace," she
said.
Some remain inconsolable.
"I don't know what to do next. There's
nothing left for me here," said Kaharuddin,
the fruit vendor still looking for his
daughter's body under the pink concrete
rubble of their former home.

(AP Photo/Nariman El-Mofty) Aug.12, 2018 Often the tides of the Mediterranean bring ashore instead the bodies and belongings of others who attempted a similar migration _ those from distant countries who hoped that the beaches of North Africa would be their last stop before Europe. These migrants have already traveled thousands of miles just to reach the Mediterranean coast, where their journey stops abruptly. • 8. The belongings are painstakingly gathered by an artist who tries to create beauty out of sorrow _ a torn pink bra, a child’s worn jacket, a pack of cigarettes. And the bodies are retrieved by a retired fisherman, who has made it his life’s work to provide a proper burial to the foreigners even though they die without a name.November 5, 2018 Pictures of the day - Oct.11 - Oct.15, 2018 - vinhbinh2010 8
  • 9. The Mediterranean has been robbing Tunisia of its young, who abandon their homeland in hopes of a better life in Europe. At the closest points, Ras Jebel in the north and the Kerkennah Islands in the east, it’s a half-day sail if all goes well. But the sea often swallows the rafts whole, and their passengers disappear without a trace. This Saturday, April 14, 2018 photo shows Ras Jabal, Tunisia. • 14. Migrants who go missing are a daily reproach to political failure, so there is rarely an official count of the departed, the dead or the disappeared. However, an Associated Press tally has documented at least 56,800 migrants dead or missing worldwide since 2014 _ almost double the number found in the world’s only official attempt to count them, by the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration. This includes the 11 young Tunisians who disappeared off the coast on May 7, 2011, and were never counted by their government. They left behind parents and siblings, who on a clear day can see the island where the boat crashed against the rocks and sank. Their photos, school notebooks and clothing for the most part remain untouched in their rooms. In case they return. This Sunday, April 15, 2018 photo shows the "Cemetery of the Unknown," where migrants who were found dead on nearby shores are buried, in the port town of Zarzis, Tunisia. • 15. This Monday, April 16, 2018 photo shows a boat that carried migrants at the coastal city Monastir, Tunisia. (AP Photo/Nariman El-Mofty) Aug.16 , 2018 “Europe is protecting its borders but has no interest in the human beings,” said Chamsedding Marzouk, the former sailor who maintains the cemetery of the unknown as a volunteer. “Who will visit the graves of our relatives when they die? Who will visit these graves? Who will weep for them?” Text from the AP news story, In Tunisia, the sea takes migrants and brings back bodies, by Nariman El-Mofty and Lori Hinnant.
