Hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants
escaping poverty and violence in
their home countries are fleeing to
forests to escape police raids in the
northern Moroccan port city of
Tangiers — only to be chased from
their makeshift camps.

Migrants have been arriving
in Morocco in increasing
numbers in a bid to get to
Spain via the Strait of
Gibraltar. A prime route from
Libya to Italy is being choked,
notably by the Libyan coast
guard intercepting smugglers’
boats.
Rights activists in this North
African kingdom say the
crackdown on migrants is the
biggest since 2015.

Many of those arriving in Tangiers, one of
several Moroccan jump-off points to Spain, say
they escaped into the forest after police
smashed doors of their small shared rooms in
Tangiers and took money they were making to
pay smugglers.
Now, migrants say they aren’t safe in the
nearby forest where they claim there are more
raids, with police seizing their belongings,
burning camps and forcing them onto buses to
head to points in southern Morocco — further
away from the northern border.
Those who escaped the raids in town and in the
forest say they have nowhere left to hide.
If they return to the city, “They (authorities)
ask residents to hand us over if we go asking
for water,” said Skey Mansare, a migrant from
Cameroon.
A Morocco government spokesman, Mustapha
El Khalfi, said the country can no longer let its
territory shelter human trafficking networks
and refuses to play the role of gendarme of the
region. Authorities say Morocco prevented
65,000 migrants from crossing to Spain in 2017.

“I’m convinced that the energy we
send them from here helps them,” said
Quima Albalate a 58-year-old nurse
who joins her son for twice-a-week
picnics of solidarity in these quiet hills
of rural Catalonia.
Jailed Catalan separatists, together
with those who fled abroad to avoid
prosecution by Spain, have become an
emotional symbol of what many
perceive as Spain’s heavy-handed
attempt to crush the independence
movement in Catalonia. They are also
a key stumbling block in negotiations
trying to find a way out of the political
deadlock, Spain’s worst constitutional
crisis in decades.

Their absence casts a shadow over Thursday’s
commemorations of the year since Spanish
police began searching government buildings
in Barcelona and arresting Catalan officials.
Several thousand people, including Catalan
regional president Quim Torra, turned out for a
protest Thursday night in Barcelona to mark
those events, which helped to fire up the latest
secessionist push in a region where many have
long sought to break away from Spain.
Protesters shouted for the jailed activists to be
released from prison.
Nine of the separatists remain in preventive
jail on preliminary charges of rebellion and
abuse of power. Seven are in Lledoners,
including prominent activists Jordi Sanchez and
Jordi Cuixart, who drew tens of thousands to
the streets one year ago to protest police
searches ahead of Catalonia’s banned Oct. 1,
2017 referendum on independence. Former
regional ministers Oriol Junqueras and Jordi
Turull are also here.

this week outside the prison’s walled
perimeter and put her husband on
speakerphone for supporters.
“We’re OK, we are strong,” Turull said,
replying to questions by friends and
relatives who applauded when they
heard his voice.
Holding Catalan independence flags and
wearing yellow t-shirts and ribbons —
ubiquitous symbols of support for those
they consider to be political prisoners —
these families have been setting up the
picnic tables twice a week ever since the
inmates were transferred from prisons
near Madrid to this facility 70 kilometers
(43 miles) north of Barcelona.

The transfers were ordered by Spanish
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez soon after
he came to power in June to ease the
political conflict. But regional separatist
authorities in Catalonia want more and
are urging state prosecutors to change
their position and allow the release of the
prisoners.
The central government, which appoints
the top prosecutor, is sticking to the line
that the separatists are receiving due
process according to Spanish law. But
some officials have acknowledged that
dialogue would be easier with the
Catalans out of jail.
Foreign Minister Josep Borrell, a politician
from Catalonia who presided over the
European Parliament, recently said “at a
personal level” he would have preferred
for the separatists to be free while
awaiting trial. That comment was
mirrored by Territorial Affairs Minister
Meritxell Batet, another Catalan in
Sanchez’s cabinet, who said “it would be
better and much easier for the dialogue” if
the Catalans were free.

For separatist parties in the prosperous region,
however, the prisoners keep pro-independence
supporters united, says political analyst Pablo
Simon.
“For a highly fragmented Catalan movement that
scrambles to find the next step in the fight for
independence, the prisoners’ plight is their only
source of cohesion currently. But the politicians
are in the hands of activists who think that with
jailed separatists there can’t be any compromise
with central authorities,” said the Carlos III
University professor. “There’s very little room to
maneuver.”
Meanwhile, divisions over the issue of
independence are still running high in the streets
of Catalonia. Some people have objected to using
public spaces to hang symbols in support of the
prisoners.

For separatists — but also for some of
those who don’t support a separate
Catalonia — the jailing of the officials
without even setting a date for a trial
feels like a deep injustice.
“We need the higher courts to look at
us here and see that these people
defended political ideas,” said Albalate,
the nurse. “But that’s not a reason for
them to be in jail.”
Bragulat said she hoped “the European
Community at some point will say
something.”
But even Europe seems unmoved by the
Catalan separatists’ plight.

Council of Europe Secretary General
Thorbjorn Jagland told reporters this
month that he “had no doubt Spanish
courts were treating the matter in
accordance with Spanish law and the
European Human Rights convention.”
He said the separatists could appeal
their case in the European human
rights court but only after they had
gone through courts in Spain.
That’s a bleak prospect for supporters
and relatives like Bragulat, who told
The Associated Press she has “gotten
used to living day by day” in order to
cope with her husband’s absence.
“We don’t know how long all of this
will last,” she said. “But it will end well,
right?”

Alma Morales Rosario, who suffers
from diabetes and a blood disease,
had taken out a loan to upgrade her
home before it was destroyed by the
storm, leaving her homeless and in
debt.
After the storm, Rosario rented a
home until she could no longer afford
it on her monthly pension of $598. She
now splits time between the homes of
her mother and her daughter in the
central mountain town of Morovis.
Rosario said she received $7,000 in
FEMA aid, but it ran out, she is now
using money and other help from a
relative to try to finish reconstruction
of her house.
"I hope with God's help to have the
house closed on the outside, walls and
ceiling, in November,” she said. “I
never thought that this was going to
happen to me.”

Africa, Wamba clung on to his
treasured ball until he had to
jettison it on the sea crossing
from Turkey to Greece. He is
now under the wing of one the
country's biggest clubs, Aris, as
he waits for his asylum
application to be processed.

"I didn't have shoes to play
basket," Wamba, a towering
figure with boyish looks and
bleached hair, said of life in
Congo, a nation rife with
poverty despite its oil wealth.
"I played with flip-flops.
Sometimes with nothing,
without shoes, with only my
legs, with blood sometimes,"
he said, cradling a ball
between legs that are almost
too long for the bed in the
room provided by a U.N.
refugee agency scheme.
When Wamba, 17, arrived in
Greece in March 2016, his
prospects, like thousands of
asylum-seekers languishing
on Greece's islands, were dim.
Then technology changed his
luck.
Papadopoulos presents the application during an interview with Reuters in Thessaloniki

After months on Lesbos, he created a profile on Athlenda, a start-up
described by its founder Lazaros Papadopoulos, a former Greece national
team player, as "LinkedIn for athletes," bringing together players, coaches,
clubs and scouts.
He was quickly spotted by Aris, the Thessaloniki-based team of Greek
basketball great Nick Galis, a Hall of Famer.
"I liked him from the first moment because I saw his passion. And when I
see talent, a kid trying to do whatever it takes to play, I couldn't not be
moved," said Papadopoulos, who mentors Wamba. "He's got all the specs
to succeed."
In Africa, where soccer is king, Wamba was too tall to play. He bought his
first basketball with food money and taught himself by watching NBA videos
and trying to emulate his idols, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant.

"We didn't have food to eat but I don't care. When I didn't have food I prefer to (pass) my time
in the court," he said.
He fled in 2015 when protests and violence broke out in the capital Brazzaville over a
contested referendum by long-serving President Denis Sassou Nguesso to lift limits to his
term.
He was jailed for days and feared for his safety, he said. Dozens of activists remain in prison,
Amnesty International said in March.
Wamba travelled to Turkey, where he spent months scrabbling together the money to pay a
smuggler for the treacherous dinghy journey to Greece.
"It was night. We didn't know the way. We spent four hours in the sea ... The water was so
cold in March. You can't move. If you move people (say) 'hey, you want people to die?'"
Eventually, they were rescued by the Greek coast guard.
Wearing a puffer jacket, a track suit and a beanie hat, Wamba was taken to Greece's biggest
migrant camp, Moria, according to Reuters journalists who saw him arrive.

There, he skipped meals to practice for seven hours a day. Often, he ran
some 20 km to find a basketball court, he said.
Since June, the 6'7" (2-metre) player - whose full name is Christ Wamba
Bouassou Joachim Mossai Fidele - trains in Aris's yellow jersey as shooting
guard and forward. Without legal status in Greece, he's banned from
playing.
"He's very cooperative, he's a great kid and he deserves this opportunity.
We're happy to have him," Aris coach Vangelis Angelou said. The team is
even considering taking him on as a foreign player, he said.
Back in his tiny room, Wamba dreams of joining the NBA one day.
"I try to be the best. Maybe one day in the future they will talk also about
me," he said.
