Enthralling, historical Jaipur, Rajasthan's capital, is the gateway to India's most
flamboyant state. The city's colorful, chaotic streets ebb and flow with a heady brew of old
and new. Careering buses dodge dawdling camels, leisurely cycle‐rickshaws frustrate
swarms of motorbikes, and everywhere buzzing autorickshaws watch for easy prey. In the
midst of this mayhem, the splendor of Jaipur's majestic past are islands of relative calm
evokingadifferentpaceandanotherworld.
At the city's heart, the City Palace continues to house the former royal family; the
Jantar Mantar, the royal observatory, maintains a heavenly aspect; and the honeycomb
Hawa Mahal gazes on the bazaar below. And just out of sight, in the arid hill country
surroundingthecityisthefairy‐talegrandeurofAmberFort,Jaipur'sstarattraction.
Some of Jaipur's best shopping experiences are to be found in city's old bazaars.
These are located in the walled city, around the two main blocks called the Badi and Chhoti
Chaupar. Embroidered apparel, carry bags, silver jewellery, real gems, regal rugs — what
morecouldyouwant?Jaipurhasthemallandmuchmoreatcheapratesifyouknowtheart
of haggling well. There are some alleys and lanes that are some of the best‐kept shopping
secrets in Jaipur for fashion ladies and gentlemen. Visit them for a first‐hand experience of
the city's long‐standing tradition of craftsmanship, and to get schooled in the art of
bargainingwhileyou'reatit.
INTRODUCTION
The bazaar is located on south ‐
eastern periphery of the walled city
between Sanganeri Gate and Ghat Gate.
The length of the bazaar street is around
eight hundred meters consisting of retail
shops of electronic goods and groceries.
Historically, the area constituted as open
graze land for people involved in cattle
rearing and farming. With time, due to
immigration and increasing sprawls, the
local residents started to build without
considerations of regulations of the old
city fabric. An organized development
pattern of old city fabric was replaced with
a random and sporadic development with
a complex street networks and confused
ownershipstructure.
THE SITE
Strengths:
● Less dense in terms of built development, number of users /visitors, building heights.
● Open land owned by government available in patches.
● Location right on the edges of the walled city.
● Almost half of the shops in markets are vacant.
● Availability of terraces on first two levels along the road on both the sides.
● Market building still retains the character of the city.
● Less vehicular traffic
Weaknesses:
● Partial encroachment on open government land by neighboring residents.
● Less movement of people during the day and almost no movement during late evening and nights.
● Presence of wine shops in vacant market.
● Locality on back side of the residents of news and big who are not very cultured.
Opportunities:
● Less density as compared to other parts of the walled city offers redistribution of activities which
increase occupancy and movement in Sanjay bazaar and reduce congestion in other parts.
● Government ownership of majority of properties allows more control and freedom to explore.
Available spaces on ground as well as terrace indicate interesting possibilities of vertical
segregation of activities as well as intersections.
● Its location attracts crowd from walled city as well as scheme areas outside due to easy access.
● No issues of traffic and congestion due to less movement community pattern.
Threats:
● If open spaces are not efficiently used, it will encourage encroachment, less movement of people
will increase issues of safety and security.
● Presence of wine shops in such locations create nuisance and illegal activities threaten the well
being of neighborhood.
● Poorly executed and maintained EWS &LIG colonies degraded the experience and aesthetic
quality of the place.
