Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause respiratory illness, including the common cold. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. It spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Spread is more likely when people are in close contact with others. People can protect themselves by wearing masks, social distancing, hand washing, disinfecting surfaces, monitoring for symptoms, and getting vaccinated.
