You’re not that hard to find ONLINE ...
As technology develops, more and
more people begin to connect with
each other through social networks
online
To what extent does social networking websites
such as Facebook, violate our privacy and place us
in danger?
As of 2014,
Facebook has
about
1.3 billion
monthly users
but is it really safe...?
Facebook gives you the option to
toggle with privacy settings
• settings can either be:
• only me
• friends
• friends of friends
• public
• custom
these settings only
help occasionally ...
WHY?
because as a habit,
we put too much
online
which...
makes it really easy to track you...
take a look at your profile ...
you have FRIENDS
your ABOUT section is filled
Work and Education
Places Lived
Basic Information
Birthday
Gender
Relationship Status
Contact Information
email
mobile number
you have TAGGED PHOTOS/ UPLOADED PHOTOS
you have STATUS UPDATES
you have CHECKED IN
say... you’ve changed all privacy settings to
friends only
• Others still have:
UPLOADED photos of you
TAGGED you
• aka. their friends know what your
name is, and what you look like
you may have accidentally added someone
you don’t know ... but have a few mutual
friends ... only to realize that your friends have
no idea who this person is either ...
people usually find you on Facebook through a
mutual friend’s
friends list to send you a friend request
People who aren’t your friends can send you
messages
they can see your profile picture
& cover photo
If you’re thinking about deactivating your Facebook
by now ...
Your information will still be kept in their records
Facebook keeps track of everything you post or
delete (messages included)
Data is never fully erased after you post it...
The more apps you’re linked to,
the easier you are to find online.
Try Googling your name|
your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or maybe even
your image just popped up in the results
if your name and current living city is obtained from
what you’ve posted on social media,
a simple search online with certain websites
(ie. white pages)
can identify your phone number, address and
provide a satellite image of your house
the improvement of digital media has:
promoted over-sharing of photos
promoted photo tagging
invaded online and offline privacy
placed individuals in danger
magnified people’s digital footprint
So, social connections are efficient, can
keep you updated, and provides a
platform for people far away in distance
to stay connected
However, there are many
consequences
for it ...
Stay connected
