3. Rome's history spans more than two and a half
thousand years, since its legendary founding in
753 BC. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
In the ancient world it was the capital city of
the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and
the Roman Empire, and is regarded as one of
the birthplaces of western civilization.
Since the 1st century AD, Rome has been
considered the seat of the Papacy and in the 8th
century it became the capital of the Papal
States, which lasted until 1870.
In 1871 Rome became the capital of
the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of
the Italian Republic.
Rome is the only city in the world to contain in
its interior a whole state, the enclave of Vatican
City: for this reason it has been often defined as
capital of two states.

4. Legend of the Founding of Rome
Traditional stories handed down by the ancient
romans themselves explain the earliest history of their
city in terms of legend and myth. The most familiar of
these myths, and perhaps the most famous of
all Roman myths, is the story of Romulus and Remus,
the twins who were suckled by a she-wolf.
They decided to build a city, but after an
argument, Romulus killed his brother. According to
the Roman annalists, this happened on 21 April 753bc.

9. The Ponte Vecchio ("Old Bridge")is a Medieval stone closed-
spandrel segmental arch bridge over the Arno River, in Florence,
Italy,famous for having shops built along it, as was once
common. At start butchers occupied the shops. Today there are
jewellery stores, art stores and souvenir shops. The Ponte
Vecchio's two neighbouring bridges are the Ponte Santa Trinita
and the Ponte alle Grazie.
The bridge spans the Arno at its narrowest point and it is
believed that a bridge was first built in Roman times.
The Roman piers were of stone, the superstructure of wood. The
bridge first appears in a document of 996. After being destroyed
by a flood in 1117 it was reconstructed in stone but swept away
again in 1333.
The bridge consists of three segmental arches: the main arch has
a span of 30 meters the two side arches each span 27 meters. The
rise of the arches is between 3.5 and 4.4 meters.
It has always hosted shops and merchants who displayed their
goods on tables before their premises. The back shops that may
be seen from upriver, were added in the seventeenth century.

capital of Sicily is Palermo.
Sicily is a prime area for active
volcanoes and the most famous
ones are Etna Stromboli and
Vulkano.

largest city in Italy and is
located in the North.
Verona is most famous for
the fact that
Shakespeare’s play
Romeo & Juliette took
place there. Most of the
city is done in their
honour and that is why it
is known as the romantic
city. There is even a
bronze statue of Juliete
with a legend that states
that if you grab the statue
by the breast your wish
will come true.
