Italy is located in Southern Europe and comprises the Italian Peninsula as well as the two largest islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Although most of Italy's territory is within the Italian peninsula and Alpine basin, some areas extend beyond the Alps into other drainage basins, and the island of Lampedusa is located off the coast of Africa. Italy has a total area of 301,230 square kilometers, including water areas, and over 7,600 kilometers of coastline on the Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas as well as land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The Apennine Mountains run through the peninsula and the Alps form its northern boundary.
