ISWC2016 P&D - Discovering and Using Functions via Content Negotiation

Data has been made reusable and machine-interpretable by publishing it as Linked Data. However, Linked Data automatic processing is not fully achieved yet, as manual effort is still needed to integrate existing tools and libraries within a certain technology stack. To enable automatic processing, we propose exposing functions and methods as Linked Data, publishing it in different programming languages, using content negotiation to cater to different technology stacks, and making use of common, technology-independent identifiers to make them discoverable. As such, we can enable automatic processing of Linked Data across formats and technology stacks. By using discovery endpoints, similar to those used to discover vocabularies and ontologies, the publication of these functions can remain decentralized.

Our daily life is strongly influenced through decision-making processes based on large amounts of data, of which both the data values as the meaningful (semantic) relationships can be included in knowledge graphs. Given their automatic processing, knowledge graphs must be of high quality on both these fronts. This thesis focuses on both improving data quality, as assessing semantic quality of knowledge graphs. On the one hand, it describes a framework to generate knowledge graphs with extensible data transformations that can clean data ("RML + FnO"), expanded to perform data transformations automatically and implementation-independent ("FnO.io"). On the other hand, it describes a validation approach building on a rule-based reasoning solution ("Validatrr"). This takes into account the semantics used, and enables specific improvements to knowledge graph due to detail root cause explanation of quality problems. Thanks to these contributions, data values in knowledge graphs are cleaned up while generating knowledge graphs, and they can be completed using automatic data transformations on existing knowledge graphs. Our validation approach makes it possible to accurately assess the quality of semantic relationships in knowledge graphs. The combined work makes it easier to improve data quality and assess semantic quality for knowledge graphs, which ensures that knowledge graphs can be used correctly in decision-making processes.

A key source of revenue for the media and entertainment domain is ad targeting: serving advertisements to a select set of visitors based on various captured visitor traits. Compared to global media companies such as Google and Facebook that aggregate data from various sources (and the privacy concerns these aggregations bring), local companies only capture a small number of (high-quality) traits and retrieve an unbalanced small amount of revenue. To increase these local publishers’ competitive advantage, they need to join forces, whilst taking the visitors’ privacy concerns into account. The EcoDaLo consortium, located in Belgium and consisting of Adlogic, Pebble Media, and Roularta Media Group as founding partners, aims to combine local publishers’ data without requiring these partners to share this data across the consortium. This presentation describes the usage of Semantic Web technologies, allowing for a decentralized approach where federated querying enables local companies to combine their captured visitor traits, and better target visitors, without aggregating all data.

EcoDaLo: closing event

High quality Linked Data is an important factor for the success of the Semantic Web. However, the quality of generated Linked Data is typically assessed and refined after the dataset is generated, which is computationally intensive. Given Linked Data is typically generated from (semi-)structured data which highly influences the intrinsic dimensions of the resulting Linked Data quality, I investigate how a generation process can automatically be validated before RDF data is even generated. However, current generation processes are not easily validated: descriptions of the data transformations depend on the use case or are incomplete, and validation approaches would require manual (re-)definition of test cases aimed at the generated dataset. I propose (i) a generic approach to declaratively describe a generation process, and (ii) a validation approach for automatically assessing the quality of the generation process itself. By aligning declarative data and schema transformations, the generation process remains generic and independent of the implementation. The transformations can be automatically validated based on constraint rules that apply to the generated RDF data graph using custom entailment regimes. Preliminary results show the generation process of DBpedia can be described declaratively and (partially) validated.

Functions are essential building blocks of any (computer) information system. However, development efforts to implement these functions are fragmented: a function has multiple implementations, each within a specific development context. Manual effort is needed handling various search interfaces and access methods to find the desired function, its metadata (if any), and associated implementations. This laborious process inhibits discovery, and thus reuse. Uniform, implementation independent access is needed. We demo the Function Hub, available online at https://fno.io/hub: a Web application using a semantic interoperable model to map function descriptions to (multiple) implementations. The Function Hub allows editing and discovering function description metadata, and add information about alternative implementations. This way, the Function Hub enables users to discover relevant functions independently of their implementation, and to link to original published implementations.

RDF generation processes are becoming more interoperable, reusable, and maintainable due to the increased usage of mapping languages: languages used to describe how to generate an RDF graph from (semi-)structured data. This gives rise to new mapping languages, each with different characteristics. However, it is not clear which mapping language is fit for a given task. Thus, a comparative framework is needed. In this presentation, we investigate a set of mapping languages that inhibit complementary characteristics, and present an initial set of comparative characteristics based on requirements as put forward by the reference works of those mapping languages. Initial investigation found 9 broad characteristics, classified in 3 categories. To further formalize and complete the set of characteristics, further investigation is needed, requiring a joint effort of the community. A large part of Linked Data generation entails processing the raw data. However, this process is only documented in human-readable form or as a software repository. This inhibits reproducibility and comparability, as current documentation solutions do not provide detailed metadata and rely on the availability of specific software environments. We propose an automatic capturing mechanism for interchangeable and implementation independent metadata and provenance that includes data processing. Using declarative mapping documents to describe the computational experiment allows automatic capturing of term-level provenance for both schema and data transformations, and for both the used software tools as the input-output pairs of the data processing executions. This approach is applied to mapping documents described using RML and FnO, and implemented in the RMLMapper. The captured metadata can be used to more easily share, reproduce, and compare the dataset generation process, across software environments.

Mapping languages allow us to define how Linked Data is generated from raw data, but only if the raw data values can be used as is to form the desired Linked Data. Since complex data transformations remain out of scope for mapping languages, these steps are often implemented as custom solutions, or with systems separate from the mapping process. The former data transformations remain case-specific, often coupled with the mapping, whereas the latter are not reusable across systems. In this paper, we propose an approach where data transformations (i) are defined declaratively and (ii) are aligned with the mapping languages. We employ an alignment of data transformations described using the Function Ontology (FnO) and mapping of data to Linked Data described using the rdf Mapping Language (RML). We validate that our approach can map and transform DBpedia in a declaratively defined and aligned way. Our approach is not case-specific: data transformations are independent of their implementation and thus interoperable, while the functions are decoupled and reusable. This allows developers to improve the generation framework, whilst contributors can focus on the actual Linked Data, as there are no more dependencies, neither between the transformations and the generation framework nor their implementations.

Rule-based reasoning systems have the advantage that rule sets can be managed and applied separately, which facilitates the custom configuration of those systems. However, current implementations of rule-based reasoning systems usually introduce a trade-off between expressiveness and performance, which either deteriorates the configurability of the application, or limits its performance in an event-driven system. In this paper, we devise an event-driven rule-based reasoning system that preserves its expressiveness. We devise an automatic nurse call system that is able to handle hard time constraints without limiting the possibilities of the reasoner, and list the encountered problems together with their suggested solutions. We achieve reasonable performance in small-scale environments when evaluating this system using N3 rules and the EYE reasoner. We however observe that a large dynamic database limits the performance of the system, because of the file-based nature of the EYE reasoner. As long as no in-memory reasoning is supported, the performance of the resulting system cannot compete with the state of the art. However, the linear scaling of the proposed expressive solution is promising.

More and more users obtain new knowledge using e-learning systems, and often assess their understanding of this new knowledge using corresponding assessment items. However, the distribution of content items and assessment items in a learning object is tightly bound. To publish assessment items, independently of the corresponding content items, it is required to wrap these assessment items into separate learning objects, which introduces a large overhead. Moreover, current learning objects are closely coupled with their execution environment. A stand-alone and lightweight format to describe assessment items is needed. This way their publication is facilitated and their discoverability can be increased. This presentation proposes some important features for such a format and introduces SERIF: a Semantic ExeRcise Interchange Format, whose underlying data model is based on the QTI data model, and that can be distributed into different RDF serializations. SERIF was applied successfully in three proof-of-concept applications, where we assessed how SERIF is decoupled from the execution environment and extendable to other content and interaction types. In future work, we will exploit its defined semantics for automatic discovery and combination of assessment items.

Digital publications host a large amount of data that currently is not harvested, due to its unstructured nature. However, manually annotating these publications is tedious. Current tools that automatically analyze unstructured text are too fine-grained for larger amounts of text such as books. A workable machine-interpretable version of larger bodies of text is thus necessary. In this paper, we suggest a workflow to automatically create and publish a machine-interpretable version of digital publications as linked data via DBpedia Spotlight. Furthermore, we make use of the Everything is Connected Engine on top of this published linked data to link digital publications using a Web application dubbed "StoryBlink". StoryBlink shows the added value of publishing machine-interpretable content of unstructured digital publications by finding relevant books that are connected to selected classic works. Currently, the time to find a connecting path can be quite long, but this can be overcome by using caching mechanisms, and the relevancy of found paths can be improved by better denoising the DBpedia Spotlight results, or by using alternative disambiguation engines.

Digital publications can be packaged, distributed, and viewed via the Open Web Platform using the EPUB 3 format. Meanwhile, the increased amount of mobile clients and the advent of HTML5’s Geolocation have opened a whole range of possibilities for digital publications to interact with their readers. However, EPUB 3 files often remain closed silos of information, no longer linked with the rest of the Web. In this paper, we propose a solution that addresses the difficulties of reconnecting digital publications with the Web using the spatial location of the concepts mentioned in the publication. We enrich digital publications by connecting the detected concepts to their URIs on, e.g., DBpedia, and use an algorithm that uses these URIs to retrieve or approximate the coordinates of these concepts. The evaluation of the approximation algorithm showed that almost any concept can be linked to a coordinate, but that the errors can be very high when context information is limited. This means relevant locations for a user can be shown, based on the content he or she is reading, and based on his or her location. This methodology can be used to reconnect digital publications with the online world, to entice readers, and ultimately, as a novel location-based recommendation technique. Digital learning content is becoming more and more commonplace. However, the creation of this learning content is usually done in specialized publishing platforms, that may lock in the content. This prevents the learning content from being discovered automatically, and hinders its uptake. A more general approach for authoring discoverable learning content is needed. We built a user-friendly authoring environment for creating digital publications, enriched with multimedia and interactivity features. This authoring environment outputs the created content in open formats, independent of any publishing platform. We adjusted our authoring environment to create semantically enriched learning content using the RDFa syntax, without the need for manual intervention. This presentation and accompanying video (users.ugent.be/~bjdmeest/lile_demo.mp4) shows how well-structured and well-annotated digital learning content can be created and validated using our authoring environment. The result is a discoverable publication in an open format, ready to be distributed as is, or ready to be imported in existing publishing platforms.
