Triennial Review
Staff will receive notifications regarding their triennial review on a three yearly basis. This review
needs to be completed with your Line Manager and the documentation sent to the practice
placements team to record.

Tracey Hilton took over as Interim Training Delivery Manager from 1st
April.
This training applies to all new starters (substantive and bank staff band 1-4) who have
commenced employment from 1st
April 2015. A higher care certificate is being
developed for healthcare support workers who have been in post prior to 1st
April 2015.
The training is being delivered over an 8-week period as part of new starters’ induction
to CLCH.
The London Community Healthcare providers (CNWL NHS Trust, CLCH and Hounslow
and Richmond Community Healthcare) are collaborating to deliver the Care Certificate
training.
The Care Certificate is made up of 15 standards, all of which learners will need to meet
before they can be awarded the ‘Care Certificate’
From Jan 15 – Mar 16, 195 learners booked on to the Care Certificate programme.
71 from CLCH, 92 from CNWL, 16 from HRCH, 11 from Milton Keynes and 5 x GPs

Evaluating a project to support the development of placements capacity in Child Community and Primary Care
Placement
Jumoke’s abstract was accepted for poster display at the 2016
‘Developing Multi-professional Health Educators for the Future’ Conference
at the Kia Oval on 28th
June
The conference was organised by the Professional Development Department
on behalf of the Health Education North Central and East London, Health
Education North West London and Health Education South London in pursuit
of professional development and educational excellence, by promoting
educational research and innovation in healthcare education.
The poster is an abstract of the HENWL project Jumoke is working on in
collaboration with LSBU to build organisational capacity for pre-registration
nursing placements in the community. The project supports NHS 5 year
forward view; to shift health care closer to home. To achieve this, we need to
prepare our future nurses to work in a variety of settings to ensure that their
training and learning experience should be population based with an
integrated approach (Lord Willis 2012)
A different approach to mentoring in new placements is currently being
piloted across CLCH sites. The project will be evaluated at the end of the pilot.
Virtual patients
Asha Sharma and Nick Archetta spent an interesting morning with the medical education team at St Georges University. They
looked at innovations in teaching and learning and in particular the development of virtual patients scenarios to support
medical students learning.
The software is called openlabyrinth which is free to download and enables organisations to create their own virtual patients.
St Georges have developed their own suite of scenarios which they use as follows:
1) Group discussion with students using problem solving approach
2) Students self-assessment.
3) Supporting students’ knowledge around ethics using a scenario based approach.

There is also a project which commenced in January which aims to share knowledge and learning in relation to this subject

Clinical Education Audits
From 2014 – 2016, CLCH worked in partnership with Kings college, UoH,
Bucks New University, Kingston and St Georges and UWL to carry out
Educational audits across 79 clinical services.
These services currently facilitate our pre-registration student placements.
Such audits need to be carried out every two years. The cycle will commence again
in October.

Careers Fair – Buckinghamshire New University
We actively participate in recruitment days across the various HEIs. It is a great
Opportunity to engage with students and promote CLCH
Department of Health – Connecting and Engagement Programme 2016
CLCH has partnered with the DoH ‘Connecting to patients and people who use services’
initiative. This programme is specifically designed to provide DH staff the opportunity to
see how care is being delivered first hand.
This June, we offered 3 x DoH fast streamers working within government policy
an opportunity to shadow our walk in centres, Community Nursing and School Nursing
services.

Was eye opening to hear (and see) first-hand all the challenges involved in their work.
Both of the people I was shadowing were very experienced nurses and manager of
Nurse-led services, and had a huge amount of information and insight to share.

Latest News and updates – NHS
Over 55 million patients in England are set to benefit from accessing their GP record
online.
Patients in England will be able to view test results as they come in and keep track of
their glucose levels and cholesterol on their smartphones, enabling them to take
greater control of their care and better manage their health.
Official figures reveal that over 95% of GP practices are now set up to offer online
access to detailed GP records including test results and diagnose as well as referrals,
immunisations, procedures and medications history. This is up from just 3% of
practices in January this year.
This latest step is part of a raft of online GP services available to patients, which are
designed to make their lives easier and more convenient including online appointment
booking and ordering of repeat prescriptions.

The Public believes that the government should continue to pay for the pre-
registration training of student nurses and midwives, according to a survey carried out
for a major union

The Nursing and Midwifery council (NMC) will now allow nurses and midwives to pay
their annual registration fee in quarterly instalments.
Switching to this type of payment must be done 20 days before the first of the month
in which a nurse or midwifes’ annual fee is due.

the first week of starting university
we were given our host trust. Now

more time in primary and
community services with CLCH
than in the hospital.
However I can say now that it was
a blessing in disguise. I have had
an opportunity to work with

Fast Track
We are in the throes of delivering our new innovative fast track programme. This programme recruits band 5 nurses within 6 months of
qualifying enrolling them on a 12 month structured work-based training programme. Through preceptorship, completion of a competency
framework and education, the programme guides newly qualified adult nurses or adult nurses returning to practice through a bespoke
pathway. Whilst undertaking the role of band 5 staff nurse those enrolled are then able to progress to a band 6 nursing post at the end of
the 12 month programme.
Our first cohort of nurses started in May and we have a further cohort of 16 nurses starting in September 2016.We look forward to
welcoming them on what should be a phenomenal journey.
Apprenticeships
What are Apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes, designed with employers, which combine on and off the job learning and
development activities. They are used to develop employees who are in new job roles including higher level roles.
Six of our health care support workers from Children’s Division have joined our first cohort of apprentices that started their training in June.
We will also have a cohort of 9 assistant practitioner apprentice starting in September 2015.
There will be a wide variety of apprenticeship training opportunities for all existing staff going forward. Please look out for more
information on our apprenticeship page that will be launched shortly. If you are interested or have any queries please contact- Marcia

Nursing Celebrations Day – Thursday 30
th
June
This was the second celebration event that we have run for our district nursing services. The purpose is to bring together staff from across
our services, to celebrate achievemets, share ideas and network with colleages. Forty peole attended the afternoon held at the Indian
YMCA.
The event opened with a buffet lunch and stands providing information on end of life care, educational opportunities and patient
experience along with posters of DN team leader projects.
Holly Ashforth opened the event, providing an overviw of our Achiveing Excellence Together campaign which is focussed on improving
morale and the quality of care within district nursing. This was also the final day of the current band 7 district nursing clinical leadership
programme. Holly congratulated those who had completed the programme and discussed some of the important facets of learning from
this whilst also highlighting the range of projects that they are focusing on within their teams and services.
Emily Karugaba, Clinical Nurse Lead and Sulekha Ali, Locality Manager provided an update on the current approaches to recruitment and
retention within our district nursing services. This included a update on targeting university career fairs with new materials, the rolling
recruitment programmes that are in place, our overseas recruitment drive and recruitment to a fast-track programme.
There were then facilitated table discussions which looked at 4 topics of promoting self care of staff members, enabling team working in an
agile / mobile environment, supporting staff development and defining professionalism.
Rosie Waskett, Associate Director of Quality, concluded the afternoon by presenting certicifates to those who had completed the district
nursing clincial leadership programme.

We understand at times this can be a challenge. With large student numbers and a need to increase our mentor database, it may
feel a little overwhelming at times.

  • 2. Professional Focus ISSUE 06 | Jul 16 2 Tracey Hilton took over as Interim Training Delivery Manager from 1st April. This training applies to all new starters (substantive and bank staff band 1-4) who have commenced employment from 1st April 2015. A higher care certificate is being developed for healthcare support workers who have been in post prior to 1st April 2015. The training is being delivered over an 8-week period as part of new starters’ induction to CLCH. The London Community Healthcare providers (CNWL NHS Trust, CLCH and Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare) are collaborating to deliver the Care Certificate training. Professional Focus ISSUE 06 | Jul 16 3 Evaluating a project to support the development of placements capacity in Child Community and Primary Care Placement Jumoke’s abstract was accepted for poster display at the 2016 ‘Developing Multi-professional Health Educators for the Future’ Conference at the Kia Oval on 28th June The conference was organised by the Professional Development Department on behalf of the Health Education North Central and East London, Health Education North West London and Health Education South London in pursuit of professional development and educational excellence, by promoting educational research and innovation in healthcare education. The poster is an abstract of the HENWL project Jumoke is working on in collaboration with LSBU to build organisational capacity for pre-registration nursing placements in the community. The project supports NHS 5 year forward view; to shift health care closer to home. To achieve this, we need to prepare our future nurses to work in a variety of settings to ensure that their training and learning experience should be population based with an integrated approach (Lord Willis 2012) A different approach to mentoring in new placements is currently being piloted across CLCH sites. The project will be evaluated at the end of the pilot. Virtual patients Asha Sharma and Nick Archetta spent an interesting morning with the medical education team at St Georges University. They looked at innovations in teaching and learning and in particular the development of virtual patients scenarios to support medical students learning. The software is called openlabyrinth which is free to download and enables organisations to create their own virtual patients. St Georges have developed their own suite of scenarios which they use as follows: 1) Group discussion with students using problem solving approach 2) Students self-assessment. 3) Supporting students’ knowledge around ethics using a scenario based approach. Professional Focus ISSUE 06 | Jul 16 4 Clinical Education Audits From 2014 – 2016, CLCH worked in partnership with Kings college, UoH, Bucks New University, Kingston and St Georges and UWL to carry out Educational audits across 79 clinical services. These services currently facilitate our pre-registration student placements. Such audits need to be carried out every two years. The cycle will commence again in October. If your service would like to be involved in student learning, please contact our team; Practice.placements@clch.nhs.uk Careers Fair – Buckinghamshire New University We actively participate in recruitment days across the various HEIs. It is a great Opportunity to engage with students and promote CLCH Department of Health – Connecting and Engagement Programme 2016 CLCH has partnered with the DoH ‘Connecting to patients and people who use services’ initiative. This programme is specifically designed to provide DH staff the opportunity to see how care is being delivered first hand. This June, we offered 3 x DoH fast streamers working within government policy an opportunity to shadow our walk in centres, Community Nursing and School Nursing services. See feedback below; ‘I had a brilliant time. I feel like I learnt a huge amount over the two days, and it really Was eye opening to hear (and see) first-hand all the challenges involved in their work. Both of the people I was shadowing were very experienced nurses and manager of Nurse-led services, and had a huge amount of information and insight to share. Many thanks to the Clinical Education team for organising this opportunity to connect And the teams for being so welcoming and engaging over the two days. Will. DoH Student Figures In 2015/16, CLCH supported 374 pre-registration students (Adult and Child) These allocations were sent to us from six of our partners Universities. This equates to 2224 weeks’ worth of placements during that time. For AHPS, we offered 489 weeks’ worth of practice across services such as Occupational Therapy, Physio, speech and language therapy and podiatry.   • 5. Professional Focus ISSUE 06 | Jul 16 5 Latest News and updates – NHS Over 55 million patients in England are set to benefit from accessing their GP record online. Patients in England will be able to view test results as they come in and keep track of their glucose levels and cholesterol on their smartphones, enabling them to take greater control of their care and better manage their health. Official figures reveal that over 95% of GP practices are now set up to offer online access to detailed GP records including test results and diagnose as well as referrals, immunisations, procedures and medications history. This is up from just 3% of practices in January this year. This latest step is part of a raft of online GP services available to patients, which are designed to make their lives easier and more convenient including online appointment booking and ordering of repeat prescriptions. https://www.england.nhs.uk/2016/07/gp-records-online/ NHS England. The Public believes that the government should continue to pay for the pre- registration training of student nurses and midwives, according to a survey carried out for a major union http://www.nursingtimes.net/news/education/public-against-axing-of-student-nurse- bursaries/7006089.article?blocktitle=Most-popular&contentID=-1 The Nursing and Midwifery council (NMC) will now allow nurses and midwives to pay their annual registration fee in quarterly instalments. Switching to this type of payment must be done 20 days before the first of the month in which a nurse or midwifes’ annual fee is due. A full guide to paying the NMC fee can be found on the NMC website http://www.nursinginpractice.com/article/nmc-allows-nurses-pay-annual-registration- fee-instalments If you have any feedback or queries, please contact the placements team. “Nursing is a career that I had never thought about being part of until I saw the positive impact a great nurse can have on a patient experience whilst my dad underwent treatment for Liposarcoma. I was adamant that King’s was where I wanted to study. During the first week of starting university we were given our host trust. Now being 100% honest, I was upset to find out that I was placed on a new programme where you spend more time in primary and community services with CLCH than in the hospital. However I can say now that it was a blessing in disguise. I have had an opportunity to work with amazing nurses who are interested in your learning development needs. Their enthusiasm with patients care and knowledge of conditions and treatment is inspiring. I have experienced a broad range of conditions in the community and have been fascinated at what the district nurses are able to deliver in the patient’s homes. Also whilst on placements I have been able to attend other services and observe how the multi- disciplinary team work together to make sure a clear individualised care plan is set up. CLCH have given me an amazing first year experience and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in my learning.   • 6. Professional Focus ISSUE 06 | Jul 16 6 Fast Track We are in the throes of delivering our new innovative fast track programme. This programme recruits band 5 nurses within 6 months of qualifying enrolling them on a 12 month structured work-based training programme. Through preceptorship, completion of a competency framework and education, the programme guides newly qualified adult nurses or adult nurses returning to practice through a bespoke pathway. Whilst undertaking the role of band 5 staff nurse those enrolled are then able to progress to a band 6 nursing post at the end of the 12 month programme. Our first cohort of nurses started in May and we have a further cohort of 16 nurses starting in September 2016.We look forward to welcoming them on what should be a phenomenal journey. Apprenticeships What are Apprenticeships? Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes, designed with employers, which combine on and off the job learning and development activities. They are used to develop employees who are in new job roles including higher level roles. Six of our health care support workers from Children’s Division have joined our first cohort of apprentices that started their training in June. We will also have a cohort of 9 assistant practitioner apprentice starting in September 2015. There will be a wide variety of apprenticeship training opportunities for all existing staff going forward. Nursing Celebrations Day – Thursday 30 th June This was the second celebration event that we have run for our district nursing services. The purpose is to bring together staff from across our services, to celebrate achievemets, share ideas and network with colleages. Forty peole attended the afternoon held at the Indian YMCA. The event opened with a buffet lunch and stands providing information on end of life care, educational opportunities and patient experience along with posters of DN team leader projects. Holly Ashforth opened the event, providing an overviw of our Achiveing Excellence Together campaign which is focussed on improving morale and the quality of care within district nursing. This was also the final day of the current band 7 district nursing clinical leadership programme. Holly congratulated those who had completed the programme and discussed some of the important facets of learning from this whilst also highlighting the range of projects that they are focusing on within their teams and services. Emily Karugaba, Clinical Nurse Lead and Sulekha Ali, Locality Manager provided an update on the current approaches to recruitment and retention within our district nursing services. This included a update on targeting university career fairs with new materials, the rolling recruitment programmes that are in place, our overseas recruitment drive and recruitment to a fast-track programme. There were then facilitated table discussions which looked at 4 topics of promoting self care of staff members, enabling team working in an agile / mobile environment, supporting staff development and defining professionalism. Rosie Waskett, Associate Director of Quality, concluded the afternoon by presenting certicifates to those who had completed the district nursing clincial leadership programme.

We understand at times this can be a challenge. With large student numbers and a need to increase our mentor database, it may feel a little overwhelming at times.
