The Maori creation story tells of Rangi and Papa, who represent Heaven and Earth. They were originally locked in a close embrace, leaving the world in darkness. They had six sons who wished to know what light was. After a battle between the sons, Tane-mahuta separated Rangi and Papa, bringing light and space to the world. This explains key aspects of the natural world like forests, winds, sea life, humans, and food sources according to Maori tradition.

2. ( According to the Maori tradition) "All humans are
descended from one pair of ancestor Rangi and
Papa , who are also called Heaven and Earth."

3. "In those days, Heaven and Earth clung closely
together, and all was darkness."

4. "Rangi and Papa had six sons:(1) Tane-mahuta, the
father of the forest and their inhabitants";

5. "(2) Tawhiri-ma-tea, the father ofwinds and storms";

6. "(3) tangaroa,the father of fish and reptiles";

7. (4) Tu-matauenga the father of fierce human beings";

8. '"(5) Haumia-tikitiki, the father of food that grow
without cultivation";

9. "(8) and rango-tane, the father of cultivated food."

10. " In the beginning these six sons and all other being
lived in darkness for an extremely long time, able
only to wonder what light and vision might be like."

11. After a battle between the six sons, Tu-matauenga at
food 4 of his brothers as food, sparrin Tawhiri-ma-
tea, the father of winds and storms.
