The Maori creation story tells of Rangi (heaven) and Papa (earth) who were closely joined together in darkness. They had six sons: Tawhiri-ma-tea the father of winds and storms; Tangaroa the father of fish and reptiles; Tu-matauenga the father of fierce human beings; Haumia-tikitiki the father of uncultivated food; and Rongo-ma-tane the father of cultivated food. After a battle between the sons, Tu-matauenga ate four of his brothers but spared Tawhiri-ma-tea, explaining why humans are fierce and have war, eat plants and animals, and storms exist
