- Hello and welcome, my name is Dina Grimes. This is a presentation on Oracle’s contribution to Information Technology.
- Oracle started with three software engineers who built the first commercial relational database management systems. They were innovators in information technology.
- The company started in 1977 as Software Development Labs.
- In an interview with John McLaughlin of Silicon Valley Historical Association, the founder Larry Ellison stated that he funded the birth of the company with $1200 along with Bob Miner and Ed Oates who each put in $400.
- The new target market of portable software led to the company’s name change to Relational Software Inc.
- Two years from the company’s inception, the first relational database management system was released for commercial use.
- The rapid growth of RSI the company changes its name to Oracle Systems Corporation subsequently becoming Oracle Corporation.
- Improvements persist with each version of Oracle software as new products and services are made available throughout the decade.
- 1989- The company becomes a publicly traded entity for the first time.
- 1990s- Despite management challenges Oracle forms an eastern European subsidiary with the removal of trade barriers. The company expanded with market growth by providing a more robust database and expanding client/server software by rewriting all its applications.
- 1994- Oracle predicts media storage needs and creates sufficient data servers for new applications.
- 1995- The focus shifts from client/server to the future of internet computing. Oracle becomes a leader of internet exploration for the IT industry.
- 1996- The company provides open source network computing architecture for business affordability.
- The turn of the century brings Oracle’s focus to building an integrated enterprise that will package applications into a suite of software. The shift from Client/server software allows the enterprise ease of application access through a web browser via the standard computer. This saves the enterprise money and allows for business automation and efficiency.
- Oracle introduces Oracle Real Application Clusters. According to Oracle’s timeline, “Oracle RAC allows customers to run any enterprise application on a collection of low-cost computers that operate as a singe database server”. Oracle paves the way by being the first company to offer packaged applications using a clustered database on a Unix or Windows operating system.
- 2002 - In the Information age the concern for enterprise security leads Oracle to release the “Unbreakable” ad campaign which leads the industry in security functionality.
- Oracle updates 3 of their major product lines for the internet age. These new versions include: Oracle Database, Oracle Application Server, and Oracle E-Business Suite.
- According to Oracle’s timeline in 2005 after 18 months of acquisition, the company gains PeopleSoft. With 3,000 new developers on staff, the strategy is to work on the future enterprise software.
- Oracle’s Applications Unlimited comes to fruition by hosting a major global debut in 2007. Oracle releases five major application families which are listed on the screen.
- In 2009, Oracle is the leader in middleware products through their commitment of innovation. They become #1 in middleware with more than 90,000 customers worldwide.
- 2010-The IT industry transforms when Oracle gains Sun Microsystems as they become the only vendor to offer a complete technology stack in which every layer is integrated to work together as a single system.
- The Oracle stack is complete with the addition of Sun server, storage, operating system and virtualization technology.
- In 2015 Oracle expands it’s service to the Cloud by offering unified solutions to it’s customers. Providing support from any starting point including SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS.
- The company’s headquarters is located in Redwood Shores, California. There are many locations all over the globe to accommodate its 430,000+ customers in 175 countries. Oracle has come a long way from it’s creation into the Information Technology sector. It’s innovation of developing and marketing database software evolved into adding many enterprise software product solutions. It continues to offer ground-breaking innovation in the technology industry.
